When Are Our Deepest Desires Satisfied?

Share

water in the desert (1)

Is it possible to live a life where your deepest desires are continually and completely satisfied? The Bible says:

“The Lord WILL guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

(Isaiah‬ ‭58:10)

Is God satisfying your desires like a spring of fresh water in a scorched desert would satisfy you?

‬‬If not—WHY not?

Isaiah 58 explains that unless God’s Word works itself so deeply into our soul that it completely transforms us, we will never possess the continual satisfaction He has planned for us.

“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah‬ ‭58‬:‭13‬-‭14‬

When God is the most important motivation in our life, we find our deepest satisfaction. Israel, as described in this Chapter of Isaiah, was playing religious games—fasting and praying—and all the while living in pride, oppressing their workers, living for their own pleasure, and fighting among themselves. (58:1-5)

Like Israel, Hypocrisy will prevent us from experiencing full satisfaction in life.

But when God’s ways rule our life, His love rules our heart. Our life is an instrument of His hands. His Word says we are used: “to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke, to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh.” (Isaiah‬ ‭58:6-7‬) God’s love works through us, and it is so powerful, it satisfies us while we meet the needs of others. ‬‬This is the amazing miracle of living in God’s love!

And what do WE get when we allow God’s love to move through us?

The Bible says our light will break forth like the dawn and gloom will be made as the noonday, our healing will spring up, our righteousness will be known, the glory of God will be our rear guard, God will hear us and answer our prayers, and—we will ride on the heights of the earth. (8-10,14)

What a way to live!

Our joy is at an apex when we’re fully submitted to God and generously giving of our talent, time, and gifts. Self-sacrifice is the best thing we can do for ourselves because in laying down our life, we gain it! It may seem like a great contradiction—that giving of ourselves gives us more. However, it is not.

When we give from God’s heart we are continually infused with His strength, love, wisdom, and joy as they pass through us and into others.
