Are You A Peacemaker?

When our culture talks about peace, it is often associated with getting away from life and escaping from the chaos. But is that where true peace is found? We know from what the Bible says about peace, that this was not the definition of the “peace” lived by Jesus, who is the “Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) I don’t believe Jesus had in mind cloistering ourselves away in the mountains singing “Kumbaya” when He said:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Matthew 5:9

‭‭ Jesus offers us constant peace. His peace is not like the world’s peace—which is only intermittently possessed in small bursts of time when we find respite from the chaos and craziness of life. My friend, when we observe the life of Christ, we know exactly what it looks like to be a peacemaker.

Jesus was the greatest peacemaker, but He didn’t make peace sitting in white robes with his legs crossed and his hands folded in prayer chanting to the sky.

Jesus lived intentionally in the spiritual war zone. He fought the forces of evil to the depths of hell to bring peace to humanity. Yet, He NEVER lost His peace! Why not???

Because He could not lose the essence of who He is—the “Prince of Peace.”

When we are deeply connected to Jesus, we will NOT lose our peace either. Thus, it makes sense that He would say that “peacemakers” will be called the “sons of God,” right?

When we’re living like Christ amidst the chaos of evil, we become peacemakers. If we want to be REAL peacemakers, we must never forget that we live in a spiritual war zone. Furthermore, when we’re AWARE of the battle, we must not become a pacifist or a deserter under the guise of seeking “peace.” No person or territory under the control of our enemies has peace.

To be a true peacemaker—we must be willing to get up every morning and “fight the good fight” against sin and death.

My friend, put on your spiritual night-vision goggles. Do you see those people around you? Are they born again? Do you care if they are going to spend eternity in hell? When we are passionate about being close to God and develop the remarkable mind of Christ, we are called to active duty to become “peacemakers” in this war zone of sin. The greatest peace we make for anyone else is to lead them to reconciliation to God. This changes everything for them because now peace inhabits their soul! Becoming a peacemaker changes us, too! True peace for all humanity begins in our born-again soul and spirit and works its way outward.

We become peacemakers when the Prince of Peace is THE Lord of our life.

We will NEVER become peacemakers if our life is dominated by sin because the Prince of Peace must be at the center of our life, and—He is righteous. If anything—our career, a relationship, money—is more important to us than God then—we cannot be a peacemaker. What we WORRY about most reveals what we WORSHIP, and God’s peace is not for sale. We cannot give away what we don’t possess. So, we must be mindful that we can only be powerful peacemakers when we are living in the righteousness of God. The book of James says:

“Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

James 3:18

The SEED that produces the fruit must be righteous if the fruit is to be righteous.

Christ is righteous. When He dominates our life, our life work is the fruit of HIS righteousness and the effect of this is “peace.” “Peacemakers” WORK and CULTIVATE righteousness and thus, produce peace, which is called one of the “fruits of the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-23) They are wise about the ways of God and do not cloak their sin with good works; rather their cloak is transparent so that others see the true spirit of Christ within them. The peace of Christ is unmistakably—Him—and not their own. When people meet them, they say “I want what you have” and they reply quite naturally, “What you want is not me—it is Jesus.”

Are you known as a peacemaker? My friend, the proof is not in how much yoga or meditation you do or how much time and money you spend going to the beach or the mountains. The proof is in the presence of Christ dominating your life.

It is only the Prince of Peace WITHIN us that makes peacemakers OUT of us
