Put The Love In Your Love Songs

love-song

So many of our favorite love songs seem to resonate with even more meaning around Valentine’s Day, don’t they?

  • “I’m…I’m so in love with you/Whatever you want to do/Is all right with me/Cause you, make me feel so brand new/And I, want to spend my life with you.” (Let’s Stay Together by Al Green)
  • “I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles/And the heaven’s open every time she smiles/And when I come to her that’s where I belong.” (Crazy Love by Van Morrison)
  • “There’s no love like your love/And no other could give me more love/There’s nowhere unless you’re there/All the time, all the way…I’ll die for you…” (Everything I Do, I Do It For You by Bryan Adams)

I remember I was so crazy about one guy that—even the mention of his name—would bring a glow to my entire being. Every line in these songs seemed like absolute truth! Well, that is, until—it wasn’t. Right before Valentine’s Day, he checked out. I was crushed. It really made me wonder if there was any love left on this earth that wouldn’t tear my heart up. My experience with “love” just seemed like a constant cycle of torture. About this time, God spoke some truth and He gave me the lyrics to the song “Trustin’“:

“There he goes again, and I’m left picking up the pieces

I’m so broken, when will it end?

Another lonely night and I can’t seem to find

The one who really knows me and will make it all right

Cuz I never seem to be ever quite good enough

To make him really love me and I’m just so tired of trying.

He smiles just once, my crazy heart does a dance

Takes me to the top and leaves me to crash

Oh dear God, did I really do this again?

Shut out the memories I don’t wanna live with them

Fill my broken heart with a love I’ve never known

Take me in your arms cuz I’m just so tired of tryin’

O Lord help me, find myself in You
Your love makes me worthy, You alone are true.

Slowly but surely, God has helped me learn that His love is the only enduring love—the only supernatural love—that survives the test of time and circumstances. Any promises of “love” (without God) cannot withstand the crushing demands of our soul. Yet our world’s culture pulls on our emotions with shallow gifts that fade almost before they are in full bloom. The flowers, candy, wealth, sex, romance, beauty, and all of the world’s alluring accouterments—without REAL love—don’t last. Cinderella always comes home to the coals. I had to learn an important lesson…

I must never mistake infatuation for love.

Love is selflessness. “Infatuation” is a desperate need or deep desire for another person to give us something we lack. There is a huge difference between love and infatuation. Love that is from God—is not blind; infatuation makes us blind and often very foolish. Infatuation “produces sleeplessness, euphoria, mood swings, extreme energy, emotional dependence, obsessiveness and possessiveness about the other person, blindness to their bad traits, etc.” (The Sacred Search, by Gary Thomas)

Gods love is from God and it enlightens us and makes us wise.

God’s love makes us secure enough to love others—not blindly—but rather, within the boundaries of His wisdom. We are enabled to GIVE love without reservation. We know that we are unconditionally loved by God and therefore, we are NOT looking for someone else to make us whole. God’s presence satisfies us. We look for opportunities to GIVE love. Furthermore, we want to share our life with someone who shares our common purpose to glorify God.

When we find our complete satisfaction in a relationship with God, we have the ability to objectively explore human relationships without the confusion of an infatuated mind. When we are not selfishly and rabidly seeking to be made whole by someone else, we can better evaluate their relationship with God, their values, work ethic, compatibility, etc.

Furthermore, God’s love frees us to live in this vital commandment of Jesus:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew‬ ‭6:33 NKJV

“ALL these things” includes our relationships! A love relationship with God enables us to build all our human relationships on His wisdom and love. ‬The Bible explains that we should become “rooted and grounded in love,” that we “may have STRENGTH to COMPREHEND with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,” that we may “be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians‬ ‭3:17b-19‬)‬ Wow—seek to know God—He is our only source of REAL love!

A relationship with God puts REAL love into a love song.
