The Priceless Gift of Being Declared Completely Innocent

Share

declared innocent

Have you ever carried the weight of your guilt? That sick feeling in your stomach when you know you’ve done something horribly wrong and can’t undo it? Or maybe you’ve felt the fear of one day standing before a holy God to answer for every wrong thought, word, and deed?

The Bible gives us the most beautiful and shocking answer to that fear.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus became sin for us. On the cross, He bore the full wrath of God against sin—as if He were guilty of every lie, every selfish act, every cruel word, and every dark thought we have ever committed. The holy, spotless Son of God took our entire debt of sin and guilt upon Himself and declared us as innocent.

But one of the most breathtaking beauties of the Gospel is that Jesus never became guilty!

Even while carrying the full weight and punishment of our sin, Jesus Himself remained perfectly sinless. The act of taking our sin was not an act of a weakling. It was His perfect, selfless, enduring, powerful love. He willingly bore what we deserved so that we could be rescued from our self-inflicted destruction. He remained the perfect Savior from beginning to end, and He proved He was who He said He was by raising Himself from the grave on the third day.

There is, and never has been, any person like Jesus.

Jesus accomplished what no mere mortal ever could. He became sin for us—but He never became a sinner. We become innocent—not because we earned it, but because He paid our debt in full. Because Jesus took our guilt and punishment, we get to receive His perfect righteousness.

We are declared innocent in God’s sight—just as Jesus has always been innocent.

The record of our sin is wiped clean. The wrath we deserved was poured out on Him instead. We are no longer under condemnation.

What a priceless gift this is!

We have escaped the great horror of hell; that is, eternal separation from God. Without Christ’s great sacrifice, that would have been the destiny of every human who has chosen to violate God’s perfect law of love—to be forever cut off from His presence. But because of Jesus, everyone who is born again is rescued from that fate and brought into eternal friendship with God.

So, how are we born again?

Jesus Himself explained it simply to a religious man named Nicodemus:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

To be born again is simple:

  1. You admit you are a sinner who cannot save yourself.
  2. You believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day.
  3. You 100% trust in Him alone—not your good works, not religion, not trying harder—but in His finished work on the cross.
  4. You ask Him to be your Savior and Lord, surrendering your life to Him.

When you wholeheartedly do this, His Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. You are spiritually reborn—as a child of God. Your soul and spirit are made alive in Christ. You have His genetics, and you can never stop being His child. You are made new, and you have new desires—you desire His will in your life. And—you receive the blessed gift of eternal life and the righteousness of Christ.

The knowledge of our salvation should make us perpetually thankful!

Every single day, we wake up forgiven, accepted, and loved by the Father—not because we are perfect, but because Jesus was perfect in our place. We have escaped the horror of judgment and have gained the treasure of knowing God forever. Meditate on this this truth, and it will fill your heart with constant gratitude and inspire joyful obedience.

Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God in Him!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the astonishing love of Jesus. Thank You, Jesus, that You were willing to become sin for me on the cross. You bore my guilt and Your Father’s holy wrath so that I could be declared innocent and righteous in Your sight. What a priceless gift! I am forever grateful that I have escaped eternal separation from You. Today, I rejoice that I am born again—forgiven, accepted, and made new. Help me never take this gift for granted. Fill my heart with perpetual thankfulness and cause my life to overflow with loving obedience to You. Let me live every day in the freedom and joy of being Your child. In the name of Jesus, my perfect Savior, Amen.
