God is more reliable than the most trusted person we know. Hope in God is NOT an expression of uncertainty; rather it is an expression of ABSOLUTE predictability based upon His nature. If you have watched our video on the nature of God, then you know what God says about Himself in His Word. He is INFINITELY loving, righteous, and just. He never changes.
Thus, when we have hope in God it is NEVER wishful thinking; rather, HOPE in Him is an EXPECTATION based upon His unfailing character.
Let’s use an example of an employer. If your employer has 100% of the time paid you exactly the amount he said he would and has done so for the past 25 years, and then—this Christmas, he promises you a $2,000 bonus—will you be WISHING for the bonus, or simply ANTICIPATING it because your boss has proven to be a man of his word?
Well, God is far more trustworthy than even your most beloved human friend.
God’s promises are far richer than a Christmas bonus. For example, God promises to…strengthen you, give you rest, take care of all your needs, satisfy your soul, give you peace, answer your prayers for His will, work everything out for your good, be with you, protect you, give you freedom from sin…to name just a few. Do you know anyone else who has promised to do ALL of these things AND can also make good on these promises?
My friend, God NEVER changes—thus, we can have complete confidence in His Word because of His infallible character.
Conversely, hoping in anything LESS than God is disconcerting and disquieting to our soul. The Psalmist wrote:
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.”
Psalms 42:11 NKJV
When we divert our hope to anything LESS than God—we are disappointed. But God IS our greatest hope. You see, hope in God is not so much hoping for a desired result. He already knows your desires. Rather, it is knowing God and TRUSTING Him to be your greatest source of satisfaction. Everything else is just peripheral to having a sense of God’s presence. He is the fountain of all of the good things we desire.
God knows what will be good for you, how to protect you, how to free you from addiction, how to pay your bills, how to love you, how to do your ministry work, etc. His Word is always 100% good. We don’t have to worry that He will stop being Who He IS or doing what He does; therefore, our hope is strengthened by growing our relationship with HIM.
God is our most unfailing source of hope.
If our hope is in people or circumstances—we WILL be disappointed. We even disappoint ourselves—right? But—God will always love us and He will never disappoint us.
When we fill ourselves with God’s presence, He fills us with the fruits of His Spirit—including hope.
Paul prayed:
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13 NKJV
When we experience the presence of God’s infallible character, unparalleled power, infinite wisdom, and everlasting love–our hope is NEVER disappointed!
