Many times, people will tell me, “I believe in God.” When I ask what that means, most of the time I get an answer along the lines of “Well, I believe there is a greater power that is called ‘God’.” But if we KNOW God and LOVE Him then we should be able to talk specifically about who He is, right? It should be very PERSONAL because we have experienced the RELATIONSHIP. When someone means something to us, we can talk about them and describe them nearly endlessly. We can talk about our best friend, our grandchild, our heroes…but what do we say about God?
How would you describe your relationship with God?
To simply acknowledge the presence of God does not mean you have a relationship with God. For many, their “belief” in God is very non-specific. It does not evoke passionate change; instead, it is simply “the man upstairs.” These answers remind me of this scripture:
You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
James 2:19
My friend, when we are born again, the presence of God lives WITHIN us. We have an EXPERIENCE to talk about! We should be THINKING, SPEAKING and LIVING more like HIM! God’s presence is powerful. It transforms every part of our life. We have new desires. We desire to live in God’s will. In fact, we want God’s will to dominate us in such a way that HE is more important to us than even our own family. Jesus gave us a strong command on this subject:
If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Luke 14:26-27
To “hate” here means to love ourselves or our family MORE THAN we love God. Who is the center of your life??? The proof that we love God is how we live in obedience to Him. Obedience is to put God first. It is to make Him the center. It begins with obedience to the greatest command given directly from Jesus:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
Matthew 22:37-38
Jesus MUST be our FIRST and GREATEST love. What happens when He is not our greatest love? Well, the church at Ephesus was instructed on this very subject. They were doing many good works in God’s name, but had abandoned their relationship with God. God was not fooled. He warned them:
I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
Revelation 2:2-5
Biblical belief in God is represented by our relationship with Him.
Belief in God is so much more than a bunch of good works; rather, HE is the CENTER of our life. When people know us, they know who He is because the fruits of HIS spirit emanate from us. They SEE His love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness…and they HEAR His wisdom, truth, and power. We live fearlessly—unlike the devils who know Him and fear Him. Our experience in the relationship of His love drives fear away.
When we’ve known God, our greatest fear is the thought of being far from His presence.
If you have lost the glow of your first love from when you were born again; begin by repenting for where you have strayed. There was a time in my life when I had so much sin stacked up between myself and Him that it took a long time to tear it all out. It’s an ongoing process. But my friend, if you have been born again, you can live in freedom from sin! Return to Him. Repair the relationship. There is nothing BETTER you can do for yourself! I speak from personal experience! There is no better life than living in the relationship of 100% belief in God.
When we truly BELIEVE in God, we talk about Him like He is our favorite person because—HE IS—and we KNOW we have experienced the most extraordinary relationship on earth!
