What Does A Spiritual Coma Look Like?

Last week I was discussing the Bible Concept of Human Design with a friend. In order to better explain the condition of a person who has been born again but who is not serving God, the Holy Spirit inspired me to say: “It’s like they are in a spiritual coma.” Wow—what a powerful way to understand the condition of a child of God who is living as a slave to sin!

When we are born again, it is our soul and spirit [collectively referred to as the “spirit man”] that are passed from death to life. Jesus said:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” ‭‭

John‬ ‭5:24

We are now connected to God, who is a Spirit. We are spiritually alive with Christ!

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:4-5‬ ‭‬‬

Just as our body needs sustenance – – food, Water, light, vitamins, minerals, love, etc., to keep it from shriveling and becoming sickly; our spirit man desperately needs sustenance too! For example, our spirit man needs:

Food and water

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

John‬ ‭6:35‬

‭‭”Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”

Psalms 34:8

“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” ‬

John‬ ‭4:10
Shelter

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭18:2‬
Acceptance

“To the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:6‬

Ephesians‬ ‭1:6‬
Rest

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” ‭‭

Matthew‬ ‭11:28-30‬

It’s pretty interesting, for example, that studying God’s Word together is like sharing a great meal! Additionally friendship with believers rewards us with soul-depth security, acceptance and care because our spirit man shares a common bond in Christ! Our spirit man produces the unmistakable fruit of God’s presence—love, joy, peace, gentleness, meekness, self-control—to give soul food to others!

Conversely, if we walk away from fellowship with God and get entangled with sin, our spirit man becomes so emaciated that it may fall into a spiritual coma. Oh, yes, our spirit man is still alive, but what kind of existence are we experiencing??? We forget who we are. We forget who God is. We lose our glorious purpose. We sometimes even wonder if we were ever born again; and, believe me…other people wonder too!!! Oh, my dear friend, I was there for so many years. These years, I’ve described as my “plastic Christian” years.

I’m so grateful that God brought me out of the coma!

My dear friend, if you have been born again don’t waste your precious time on this earth living in a spiritual coma! I don’t know one single person who would choose to live in a physical coma—do you? How tragic for a child of God to choose to live in sin and plunge their life into a spiritual coma! Take it from me—it’s not worth it.

God has given you so much to live for; He has plans for you that are greater than you can ask or imagine!

  1. I call it spiritual suicide, when someone is doing everything against the Lords will and it seams like they are trying to kill themself
