The Bigger The Storm; The Better The Opportunity

Each storm in life presents us with a great opportunity to glorify God; but it’s up to us to TAKE it.

Right now, when I look at a couple of huge storms brewing on my horizon, I can view them two ways—from the ground (my view) or from the air (God’s view). God sees the big picture—the beginning and the end—and I’d rather have His mind in the storm than my own perspective.  I know from experience with God, the closer I am to Him, the smaller the threat the storm poses.

WE NEED TO KNOW—GOD IS MORE POWERFUL THAN ANY STORM.

Jesus was so good at giving us examples in the physical realm to help us understand great spiritual principles. Read this account of Jesus and the disciples during a storm from the book of Mark:

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He [Jesus] was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark‬ ‭4:37-40‬)

The disciples had left everything to follow Christ, they had seen him heal lepers, paralytics, a man with a withered hand, and many others but—they STILL didn’t really know who He was—the LORD of ALL. And, so they cried out for help and Jesus brought the wind and waves under HIS control by speaking to the storm: “Peace, be still!” Before we become critical of the disciples, think about the storms you’re weathering right now and ask yourself: “Do you have peace?

I would never say that Christianity is about living in some state of Kumbaya oblivion. We are waging spiritual warfare and the enemy is prowling all around us. We have a reason to have a healthy level of anxiety. But—when we are “in the know” with the High Command—we know that WHO we fight with is greater than who we fight against. The knowledge of God and sense of His presence—give us peace in any storm. And the good news is…

…the more storms we weather, the more we get to see God’s power.

The Bible says:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will GUARD your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬

Our storms provide us an OPPORTUNITY to GLORIFY God.

Storms make us stronger than we were before it hit us.

Weathering the storms of divorce, death, heartbreak, failure, and financial crises has given me experience to help others weather the same storms. When the storms hit—and they will—you can give thanks for God’s presence and watch Him say “Peace be still,” to your fearful heart. He may not take away every storm, but He WILL give you inestimable peace to ride it out.

It’s a great miracle to weather your storms with a “peace that passes understanding.”
