The Power of Words: Three Simple Rules for Effective Communication

Share

In a world filled with conflicts and misunderstandings, there are three simple rules for communication that, if universally applied, would probably prevent more than 95% of the miscommunication and strife. These rules have the potential to foster harmony. In fact, if applied, they would likely eliminate the need for counselors, lawyers, policemen, judges, and even many of our laws.

I try to embrace these rules in all aspects of my communication, whether conversing with friends or family, and even professionally. Applying these rules to my speech has saved me from countless apologies and much unnecessary grief. Moreover, it has allowed the transformative power of Christ’s love to radiate through me, ensuring that my words do not become stumbling blocks for those in need of experiencing Jesus.

But applying these rules is not easy and I fail a LOT!

The rules are straightforward yet—require constant discipline. What are these rules? Well, before speaking, ask yourself three questions about what you are about to say:

  1. Is it kind?
  2. Is it necessary?
  3. Is it honest?

By ensuring that our words meet this criteria, our speech will reveal God’s presence rather than hide Him and confuse others about who He is. It will soothe nerves, not fray them. I have witnessed significant improvements in my life and in the lives of those around me when I run my words through this filter. Moreover, it makes me approachable and allows others to see the love of Jesus.

Rather than using words in a mercenary fashion—to accumulate wealth, gain social status, fuel pride, hurt others, manipulate situations, or any other motivation that is selfish—we draw people to God’s presence. The Bible affirms the importance of wise and uplifting speech:

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear. Like the cold of snow in time of harvest Is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes the soul of his masters. Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain. By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone.” ‭‭‬‬

Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭11‬-‭15

When we determine to communicate only what is kind, necessary and honest, we eliminate much, if not all, of the communications that cause grief and pain. Our speech promotes peace and draws others to the message of the Gospel. There are no greater words that we can speak than the words of life that lead others to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  By adhering to these rules, we open the door to powerfully speak the mightiest Words ever written—God’s Word:

“..the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” ‬‬

Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬

As born again Christians, let’s discipline our speech and engage the power of God’s Word in everything we say. What a gift to be able to share the Word that gives light and life to a blind and dying world!

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
