Today, in the United States of America, we celebrate our freedom. But do the people of our nation seem free? Freedom should bring joy and yet, what we see reflected from just about every platform of influence is hate, sadness, strife, anger, death, chaos. It’s time we ask,
“What is freedom?”
Our current culture codifies “freedom” as being able to do just about whatever we want, whenever we want—without any limitations that would violate our FEELING of what is right. We have been led to believe that the ability to satisfy our every earthly desire is the ultimate experience of freedom. Unfortunately, this “truth” is further enslaving our entire nation because it deeply violates our most basic need. We were created for a relationship with holy God, and to live contrary to His ways is to live in a preview of hell. We are enslaved to our insatiable physical desires.
God gives us a much more secure and substantial freedom.
The freedom God gives us is eternal and completely independent of earthly circumstances. We receive it when Christ frees our spirit in a relationship with Himself. Jesus said,
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:36
What does this mean?
When we are born again, Christ frees the eternal part of us—our soul and spirit. We then have a choice—about whether to live in freedom from our circumstances or—to be enslaved by money, possessions, school, work, relationships, sex, drugs, alcohol, depression, worry, etc. God makes our spirit alive and we have the ability to live completely free. The Bible says,
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
2 Corinthians 3:17
My friend, there are NO earthly chains which can bind God’s Spirit.
When we work to develop a strong sense of the presence of God by abhorring the sin for which He was crucified—we experience the most remarkable freedom on earth. God’s Spirit within us gives us the choice to live free from the things that enslave us:
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
Galatians 5:1
We experience God’s freedom when our DESIRE for His presence is so strong that it transforms our entire life. We love Christ more than we love our self-serving ways. And we allow the seed of our self-seeking life to be broken and we live according to His Word. The plant which grows produces the priceless fruit of His Spirit, the greatest of which is His supernatural love.
God’s love is unmistakable—and it is the greatest evidence we are living in His freedom.
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Galatians 5:13-14
Many have sacrificed to give us the national freedom we enjoy today. Christ sacrificed to give us the freedom we possess for eternity! If you have been born again—you own it.
Let freedom ring!
