Love is a gift that can ONLY be FULLY enjoyed when we are GIVING it away. Why? Because love is selfLESSness. Unfortunately, because we humans desperately NEED LOVE, we have significant limitations on how much love we can give without—expecting something in return. Without God, we run out of love very quickly. But God is VERY different than we are. He IS love. When we truly know Him through receiving the gift of salvation, our love-starved soul is completely satisfied to overflowing. Then we have plenty to give away; indeed, we WANT to give it away because due to the very nature of love we can’t keep it all to ourselves. In fact, that’s what love does—it gives.
This remarkable passage from 1 John explains:
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and EVERYONE who LOVES is born of God and knows God. He who does NOT love does NOT know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
I John 4:7-11
Jesus was born on this earth and died for us so our soul could be born again and we could know Him. Thus, we are empowered to experience REAL love. It is only when we are in His love, that we are willing to risk loving others without expectation. Why? Because we are so absolutely loved. We are like a person with a net worth of 5 billion dollars. He isn’t afraid to give away ten bucks to someone—even if they are going to waste it. He has more than he needs and can give without expectation loss. Ten dollars is nothing compared to what he has.
Even more so, the love we give is far less than what God gives us. When we are close to God, we possess HIS abundance of love. The value of His love far exceeds the value of anything we’ve ever had. We are so secure that we have plenty of love to give away. We also know…
Love is never a risky business when we know God because we know we will never lose Him!
“Yet in all these things we are MORE than conquerors through Him who LOVED us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:37-39
Nothing can separate us from God’s love; thus we have nothing to fear in loving others. We can love fearlessly. God’s love is the greatest force on earth. His love gave us life. Love sustains us. Love conquered death and the grave. Through the salvation of Jesus Christ, His love gives our soul the ability to live forever.
Love is the greatest gift; when we give it without expectation, we experience love the way God does.
