Possessing The Powerful Gift Of Prayer

Of all the gifts God has given us, the gift of prayer is the most powerful tool and yet one of the least utilized. For those who have accepted His gift of salvation,  we are indwelt with His powerful Holy Spirit and we have the power of His throne at our disposal!

Unbelievable!!!

In fact, it’s so unbelievable that we often don’t test the limits of this gift of prayer. But when we do—and we SEE God powerfully at work—we want to pray about EVERYTHING. God has promised us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much!” (James 5:16) How do we pray effectively? [Feel free to go back and read the 10 day devotional series on prayer as the principles God taught me have brought my prayer life to incredible heights!] In a nutshell, to have effective prayer:

  1. We must pray BELIEVING that God will answer—if we doubt, we insult God. How can we expect God to answer our prayers while we’re insulting Him?
  2. We must be asking Him to answer according to HIS WILL and for HIS glory—which is often different [but much better] than OUR desired answer.
  3. And, we must keep our lines of communication from being clogged with unholiness—because God is Holy. This involves confession and repentance.

To be effective, prayer must be done God’s way.

If we want GOD to answer our prayers, we must pray to HIM and pray according to His rules. Otherwise, we’re praying to some other god and…well…good luck with that. God is not a genie in a jug. We don’t enter into God’s presence on our terms. We can’t barge into Buckingham Palace to ask for the king’s help without following his protocol. God’s protocol focuses on our heart—He resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” ‭‭

Isaiah‬ ‭57‬:‭15‬

Because the enemy often derails my thinking about prayer, I like to meditate on the following verses to reset my mind about it:

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask ANYTHING according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we KNOW that we HAVE the petitions that we have asked of Him.”

I John‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭‬

“Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, BELIEVE that you RECEIVE them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, FORGIVE him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

Mark‬ ‭11‬:‭24‬-‭26‬ ‭

“You ask and do NOT receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” ‭‭

James‬ ‭4‬:‭3‬ ‭‬‬

Prayer, like all of God’s gifts, gets better—as we use it. The more we pray God’s way, the more effective our prayers become.

Prayer is the gift that places the power of God in the hands of His children!
