Probably one of the most often asked questions in the Bible studies I facilitate is, “How can I know God’s plan for my life?” We all want to know how to have God’s wisdom and His foresight in dealing with everyday situations and obstacles. And—God does not make this difficult for us! When we are born again, God gives us 95% of the answer in His Word. And when we are determined to live in loving obedience, we have the extraordinary opportunity to live with the attitudes and mind of Christ which help us with navigating God’s plan for life.
Then, we have access to God’s peace and wisdom to navigate the day, and it is always far beyond what we could come up with on our own—or what others might suggest!
The Bible gives us specific instruction for navigating in one short, powerful passage. It is not complicated advice reserved for “super-spiritual” people. It is practical guidance that works for everyone and applies to busy mornings, crazy afternoons, and quiet evenings.
“Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart, and lean NOT on your OWN understanding; in ALL your ways acknowledge HIM, and He SHALL direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
This is God’s invitation to put Christ at the absolute center of our daily lives: what we love, what we think about, what we dream about, and what we desire most. We begin the day WITH Him, walk through the day FOR Him, and end the night resting IN Him.
When we do, our entire lives are guided in ways we could never have planned or imagined.
We stop second-guessing every decision because our trust is no longer in our limited understanding. Instead, it rests in our omniscient Lord—who delights in directing the steps of those who acknowledge Him. To “acknowledge” God is to live in loving obedience to Him. So, if you want to KNOW God’s plan, then renew your desire each day to: 1. do what you know is right; and 2. not do what is wrong. Ask God to help you. He will!!! I love that we can talk to God all the time. Prayer is such a gift. I like to also make it a habit to practice at least three disciplines:
In the morning, I begin WITH God. Before my feet even hit the floor or I open my eyes, I say a short prayer of surrender. I begin with quiet time in His Word and communion in His presence. I ask the Lord to direct my path for the day ahead. This sets my day so my mind is reminded that I am not facing the unknown alone.
Throughout the day, I intentionally live FOR Him. I like to pause in the middle of tasks—whether at work, driving, or caring for family—and acknowledge Him. “Lord, I want this time to belong to You and to be lived for Your glory; I want this work to be done as unto You.” (Colossians 3:23) When I need to make decisions, I like to pause and ask Him, “What would honor You here?” These small acknowledgments invite His wisdom into every part of my life and keep anxiety from taking root.
In the evening, I rest WITH Him. Before I go to sleep, I like to reflect on the day, and as I do, I thank Him for the ways He guided me and for all the bad things that didn’t happen. I like to release any unfinished business into His hands. This nighttime rhythm brings deep peace because I know He never sleeps and is already preparing tomorrow.
In summary:
Friend, this simple daily rhythm—starting WITH Christ, living FOR Christ, and resting IN Christ—is the secret to a life of peace and wisdom that far exceeds anything we could manufacture ourselves. Trust Him with all your heart today. He will direct your path, and you will look back and marvel at how faithfully He led you.
When we live with each part of our day surrendered to God, we discover peace that surpasses our own understanding. (Philippians 4:7) We live in wisdom that is “peaceable.” (James 3:17) We no longer have to carry the heavy weight of figuring everything out. The Lord Himself becomes our guide, and He is always faithful.
Prayer:
(Morning) Heavenly Father, today I choose to trust You with all my heart. I will not lean on my own understanding, but in every decision, every conversation, and every task, I will acknowledge You. Direct my paths, Lord. Guide my steps in ways I could never plan on my own. Give me Your wisdom, Your peace, and Your presence from the first moment until the last. I surrender this day completely to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
(Daytime) “Lord, I acknowledge You right now. Direct my path in this moment. I trust You, not myself. Amen.”
(Evening) Father, thank You for walking with me through every hour of this day. I see now how You directed my steps in ways I never could have imagined. Forgive me for the times I leaned on my own understanding instead of trusting You. I release tomorrow into Your hands, knowing You are already there. Thank You for Your perfect guidance, Your unfailing love, and the peace that only You can give. As I rest tonight, I rest in You. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
