How To Find Someone Who Will Love You For Who You Are

A friend who had experienced an extremely painful break-up with her boyfriend said, “I just want someone who will love me for me.” Her words resound one of the deepest longings of humanity. Our secular humanist culture constantly feeds our desperate soul with misinformation about love through music, advertising, and entertainment. We are told we need to be “looking for love.” If this message is true, why do so many people still have broken hearts!?!

Has our secular culture misled us about where to find love?

You bet it has.

God’s Word teaches us two important principles about love:

1. We are ALREADY completely loved by God for exactly who we are; and

2. Real love is what we GIVE, not what we GET.

When we EXPERIENCE God’s love, then—instead of looking to GET love, we look to GIVE love! Giving without expectation is the essence of real love. God tells us to seek to give love because—-we are already so perfectly loved!

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. We love because he first loved us.”

1 John 4:7-8,19

The more we experience God, the deeper we experience love. Conversely, the less we experience God, the more desperate for love we become. Thus…

If we are looking to GET love from others, rather than to GIVE love, we have failed to recognize the most fundamental truth about love:

The supernatural love we’re all seeking—comes only from God.

God NEVER says anywhere in the Bible for us to seek to find love in other people. Why not? Because—if we are His children, we already have love. Rather, the Bible tells us to “seek God” and “give love.” If you are desperately seeking love from friends, a spouse, children, or parents, realize now—you will never find what you’re looking for from them. Dig deeper into your relationship with God because He has the love you’re seeking!

Ah, my dear friends, when you seek God with all your heart, soul, and mind—you find perfect love. The closest thing you’ll ever find to perfect love in another human, is to be loved by someone who is completely in love with God. God loves us for who we are and…they will too!

In the center of God’s love, we know how to love and to be loved.
