How Do You Know When What You’re Learning Is From God?

Share

learning the truth

Last week, a reader asked me a couple of questions in response to the October 4, 2022 devotional. She asked:

“How can we tell when a teaching is from God or if it’s just satan tricking us into thinking it is God? Is this where prayer comes in?”

These are both excellent questions! There are millions of voices vying for our attention, so how can we know WHO is telling the truth? “Truth” is an interesting and much-debated topic. Who gets to decide what it is? There are basically three versions of truth: 1. Secular humanism; 2. Biblical Christianity; and 3. The buffet option (those who pick and choose from both). The secular version of truth is constantly changing based upon cultural shifts.

But, because God never changes; neither does His truth.

The Bible instructs us to follow people whose lives reflect the teachings of God, and words are consistent with the message of HIS Word. HE is the same yesterday, today and forever:

“Remember your leaders and superiors in authority [for it was they] who brought to you the Word of God. Observe attentively and consider their manner of living and imitate their faith (their conviction that God exists and is the Creator and Ruler of all things, the Provider and Bestower of eternal salvation through Christ, and their leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness). Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is [always] the same, yesterday, today, and forever (to the ages). Do NOT be carried about by different and varied and alien teachings; for it is good for the heart to be established and ennobled and strengthened by means of grace (God’s favor and spiritual blessing) and not [to be devoted to] foods [rules of diet and ritualistic meals], which bring no [spiritual] benefit or profit to those who observe them.” ‭‭

Hebrews‬ ‭13:7-9‬

The BIBLE is God’s Word; HE doesn’t change the rules in the middle of the game.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40:8‬ ‭

“Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:89‬ ‭‬

“God is NOT a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” ‭‭

Numbers‬ ‭23:19‬ ‭‬‬

Isn’t it comforting to know that God is not like us? His Word is good—always! HE is always the same!

The short answer to my reader’s question is:

The more you study God’s Word, the more YOU know the lies from the truth.

The more you draw closer to God, the less you are led astray by others.

This means—not just going to church, listening to podcasts, or reading devotionals but ALSO—taking the time to study God’s Word and for yourself! Read God’s Word and ask Him to reveal the meaning to you. Seek truth in His Word as if you are digging for priceless treasure! Jesus is the Word (John 1). When you read the Bible with a heart to learn, [as opposed to a heart of skepticism, obligation, or disinterest] God WILL enlighten you!

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”‬

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:105

God’s Word is the ONLY truth that never changes.

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
