Good Friday: The Miraculous Power of Love

We are fascinated with the idea of being able to perform a miracle, work magic, or otherwise possess extraordinary supernatural powers. To possess power over nature to fly like Superman, make a rabbit appear in a hat, or do something purely humanitarian like heal cancer—fascinates us—right? God is omnipotent (all powerful) over all elements of nature; but did you know that there is a miraculous power He possesses and places at our disposal every day?

It’s called the power of REAL love and He demonstrated it with Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for our sins

WHY is REAL love the most powerful miracle?

To understand the “why,” we must first understand “what” about love. What is REAL love? In simplest Biblical terms, it is complete unselfishness. “God so loved the world, He GAVE…” (John 3:16) God was not FORCED to give His life; rather, He CHOSE to give His life—even when we were His enemies and completely without hope to give Him anything in return:

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans‬ ‭5:6-8‬

In love, Christ subjected Himself and sacrificed everything He had for us. To heal a leper or to bring Lazarus back to life, was an exercise of giving away His power. While it did cost him to do these miracles, His demonstration of love on the cross was a much more personal cost that purchased a much more valuable gift.

God’s love through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross purchased our eternal life.

Jesus  was mocked, falsely accused, and betrayed. He was beaten with a whip or “scourage” containing pieces of metal designed to rip the flesh off of a person’s body. His beard was ripped out. A crown made of thorns was pressed into his scalp. After hours of torture, his broken body was forced to carry a rugged wooden cross through the streets. He then was nailed to the cross where he hung until he died. The sins of mankind were placed on Jesus and God had to turn His back on His Son. This act of love paid the debt of our sin and purchased eternal life for every human: past, present, and future.

Is there any greater or more powerful miracle you could experience in this lifetime than to receive eternal life? Not only did the love of Jesus purchase our life; but when we accept the gift of salvation, we also receive the ability to GIVE real love! When we are born again, we receive the spiritual genetics of Christ and are empowered to engage in the miracle of HIS love.

We are enabled to love, without expectation, because we know we are fully loved.

Do you see how miraculous this is? God gives us the ability to love; but He also gives us the choice. When Jesus healed leprosy and resurrected the dead, the elements unquestionably obeyed Him. Why? He is Lord of Creation and Creation obeys Him. However, He does not force humans to love Him because that would contradict the very essence of love.

Jesus demonstrated the miracle of love for the entire human race, and when we choose to accept His love, we can share that miraculous and eternal gift with others.

We are hard pressed to even begin to comprehend the upper limitation of giving or receiving love. The ultimate miracle of love was demonstrated in the sacrifice of Jesus who died for us even though He knew we would continue to commit crimes against His love! We can love like HIM, because Jesus commanded us to. He wouldn’t tell us to do something impossible. When we learn to love like God does, then the assaults against our love are borne by His love within us. When we surrender to the miracle of God’s love, we are enabled to love those who hurt us. Oh, my friend, it is truly a miraculous event to love someone like God does!
