Does What You’re Doing Today Matter For Eternity?

At the end of your life, how would you like to discover that nothing you did mattered? That everything you’d labored for and worked to achieve was burned and put on the rubbish heap and you had no eternal treasures? But—if you could know the secret of turning your work into something that would shine like gold throughout eternity—wouldnt you want to know today?

God is so good to share His marvelous secrets with us!!!

After we are born again and possess the gift of salvation, we have a solid foundation in Christ that can NEVER be destroyed. The question is…what will WE build on it? Paul wrote:

“According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.”

‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭15‬

What kind of works will survive the test of fire on the Day when Christians works are judged by God? The “Day” speaks of the time when Christ will judge the merits of the works of his servants, NOT whether they will receive forgiveness of sin and be with Him forever. The matter of our salvation is settled the moment we receive Christ as our Savior. Thus, “fire” does not refer to the eternal fire of damnation, but to the evaluation of every believer’s works. This fire proves the quality of the works and consumes anything that is worthless.

So, how do you know which of your good works will survive the fire and become eternal treasures?

While I’m not sure it can be summed up in one verse; however, the words of Jesus give us a HUGE clue. A lawyer [go figure 😆] was testing Him and asked “What is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭35‬-‭40‬ ‭

If we want what we do today to survive into eternity, then each work must be motivated by our love for God. Pride is the enemy of our good works; but pure love for God is our greatest ally in capturing eternal treasures.  God “resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

When everything we do is motivated by love for God, each work becomes an eternal treasure.
