Do You Want Peace and Satisfaction? Good Habits For Your Soul

Share

I was recently talking with a Christian lady, and in the middle of the conversation, she exclaimed,
“I want what you have!” It took me by surprise. But—by the intuition of God’s Spirit, I knew exactly what she wanted. She was beautiful, had a great career, and was financially successful; but I recognized her desperate dissatisfaction. What did she want? She wanted Jesus—but she didn’t know it. He is the giver of the great peace, satisfaction, and joy she was observing. I wanted to help; but I knew I could not unless she was willing to commit. I told her, “What I have, I can’t give you because it comes only from God. But—the good news is HE can give it to you! But—you have to be willing to dedicate yourself to passionately pursuing HIM.”

I knew from my own experience that a half-hearted commitment to God would NEVER produce the kind of joy, peace, and deep satisfaction that she wanted.

I had walked that road. Giving God my leftover time, my grudging 10%, my intermittent emotional passion had produced only dissatisfaction, frustration and disenchantment. So I shared my story with her, beginning with my testimony of salvation. She told me about when she was born again, but said her passionate commitment to growing in her faith in God waxed and waned. Ah, my friend, this is where most people miss out on the best part of the Christian life here on earth. I sure did! We can have such an amazing walk with God!

Our daily walk with God is critical to possessing all the joy, peace and deep satisfaction He wants to give us.

It requires WORK. Just like a marriage or friendship requires time, commitment, loyalty, and love—it is even more critical to our walk with God. God is already the perfect partner. WE require work. Every day. That’s what you do with those you desire to have a relationship with. Thus, we must COMMIT to—reading God’s Word, talking with Him, joining ourselves to a body of believers (a church), living in obedience to His Word and—do all this NOT because we HAVE TO—but because we DESIRE and LOVE Him.

What we get in return for our love-commitment is…the love, joy, peace, wisdom and satisfaction of God!

I call this “love-commitment” to God, the “good habits of the soul.” The promises of God’s Word will never be deeply ingrained into our heart if we limit ourselves to only 5 minutes of reading or hearing it once a week. We must immerse ourselves. And we must also DO IT to develop the good habits of the soul. Think about it. If you are learning to cook and you just read (or even memorize) a recipe book—can you say you know how to cook? No—you don’t know how to cook until you’ve been in the kitchen.

Life is our kitchen; the Bible has all the best recipes to nourish our soul.

But we need to start cooking. The book of James says:

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

(James‬ ‭1:22-25‬)

When God’s Word works itself deep into our heart, we are feasting on the most highly nourishing soul-food. If the Bible does not permeate our lifestyle then we are “deceived” and we have forgotten—or, perhaps never even discovered—WHO God made us to be. How can you have peace or feel loved if you never discover who you are? God gives us our true identity. And when we live in the guidance of His Word, it feeds, grows, and transforms—our life. It is in the center of God’s presence that we have HIS joy, love, peace, wisdom, and greatest satisfaction!

We have the ability to know the Creator of all things; so of course, His Word gives us everything we need to develop the amazing and beautiful soul He gave us! Do you want to know your Divine purpose? Dive deep into God’s Word and allow it to transform every corner of your life. Then, when you look in the mirror, you’ll never forget who you are.

God Almighty has a plan to give you peace and satisfaction!
