Do You Know Your True Value?

Know your true value

As an employer, I admit I don’t take as much time as I should to let each of my team members know how much I appreciate them. It’s not because I don’t appreciate them—it’s because I’m pulled in too many directions every day. But, the fact is, that if the members of my team depended on me to know their value, they would probably feel pretty worthless. And—vice-versa!

Ah, but we are BORN with a need to know we are valuable!

But the fact is, if we are looking to establish our value through something earthly, we will never feel worth much. Our greatest value is that we were created in the image of God and absolutely loved by Him. It’s a much deeper value than any person is equipped to give us.

Most of us believe our greatest sense of worth comes from:

  • how much money we have;
  • how many friends we have;
  • who are friends are;
  • who our family is;
  • our job;
  • how we look;
  • what we accomplish; etc.

But any of these things can be gone in the blink of an eye. Where does that leave our sense of worth? I’m not gonna lie, if I lost my law license and couldn’t practice law anymore, I would feel pretty worthless! It could happen more easily than I like to think about. Would I lose my greatest identity?

According to God, we are created in HIS image; thus, we are intrinsically valuable!

But unfortunately we have allowed the enemy to delude us into believing that our value depends on our possessions, other people’s opinions, and our accomplishments. Nothing could be further from the truth. Christ thought we were worth dying for when we were the rottenest apples in the barrel.

“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ‭‭

Romans 5:6-8

Christ didn’t die for us because we were a rich, successful, popular tycoon. No. He thought we were valuable even WHEN we were sinners—when our most RIGHTEOUS DEEDS were like filthy rags! (Isaiah 64:6) And yet—He STILL went to the cross for us.

God’s love makes us priceless.

If we want to find our greatest value, we must press deeply into God’s love. If we applied even—one-fourth of the effort we spent people pleasing or wealth-building—into knowing God, we would be amazed. Knowing God increases our sense of value. God’s presence reveals the glittering and stronger-than-steel diamond He created for us to be. We value ourselves because HE makes us valuable.

This is huge!

Why?

Because then, when our boss doesn’t show us enough appreciation, it does not diminish our value because they boss doesn’t control our measure of value—God does.

When God reveals our value, we love who we are, and no one can diminish our pricelessness.  To realize our intrinsic value, we must give our whole heart to Him. We must surrender to the teaching of His Word. We must desire His ways MORE than we desire the most things of this world. In the words of the Psalmist:

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭19:7-10‬ ‭‬‬

When we know deep in our soul that we are valuable to God, we possess rock-solid confidence that is directly attributable to Him. God does not change; thus, in Him our value is never diminished. Our life becomes an adoration of God as naturally one marvels at the artist who creates a masterpiece.Just as it is the artist who gives the art value; it is God who gives us our greatest value. This profound knowledge inspires praise because we realize that EVERYTHING we enjoy—relates back to Him. As C.S. Lewis said,

“One’s mind runs back up the sunbeam, to the sun.”

Letters To Malcolm

If we derive our worth from anything or anyone less than God—we will always be undervalued.

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
