Can You Hear This Woman Called “Wisdom?”

Proverbs 8 devotional

I spent many years of my life walking past a very wise woman without ever stopping to listen to her. She was never hiding. She was standing right where I could not miss her—at the gate I walked through every single day. Yet still, I hurried by, chasing whatever seemed more urgent and more immediately satisfying.

Who is this woman?

Proverbs chapter 8 calls her “Wisdom,” and she is not tucked away in some theological seminary, waiting for only the most pious soul to find her. Wisdom takes her stand in the busiest, loudest, most ordinary, and obvious places of our lives, and she raises her voice there for anyone who will listen. She does not beg. She simply stands where the paths of life meet, on the high ground where no one can claim they missed her. She watches the crowd the way someone watches for a face they love. Her voice carries the way a voice carries when the person speaking has innate authority without anything to prove.

Proverbs 8 takes us on the journey of Wisdom. It begins by introducing the call of wisdom:

Does not wisdom cry out, and understanding lift up her voice? She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, beside the way, where the paths meet. She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entrance of the doors:

“To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O you simple ones, understand prudence, and you fools, be of an understanding heart. Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, and from the opening of my lips will come right things; for my mouth will speak truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse is in them. They are all plain to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Receive my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.” Proverbs 8:1-11

The Hebrew word behind Wisdom’s name is “chokmah.” It means “skill for living,” the kind of insight that knows how to build a house, run a nation, raise a child, and walk with integrity—all at once. Wisdom’s offering is more valuable than the gold that we spend our whole lives chasing. She offers her riches without apology, because she knows exactly what she is worth. She offers certainty and rock-solid clarity in a world of craziness. Her qualities are immense and priceless, yet offered to those who meet one simple condition. The Bible explains:

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. By me kings reign, and rulers decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, all the judges of the earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice, that I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.” Proverbs 8:12-21

Wisdom is offered to those who know God, who live in His presence, and who have an awe-struck respect for His ways.  She never allows feelings, moods, or frustration to write the narrative about her circumstances, as it would mean forfeiting peace. She traverses the way of righteousness in the midst of chaos. Then the chapter shifts, as wisdom reminds us of where she came from. Her eyes lift past the gate, past the city walls, past the horizon itself, as if she is remembering a time before any of creation existed:

“The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth; while as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, or the primeval dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep, when He established the clouds above, when He strengthened the fountains of the deep, when He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him, rejoicing in His inhabited world, and my delight was with the sons of men.” Proverbs 8:22-31

This woman was standing beside the Lord before the mountains were formed. She was present, delighted, rejoicing—and her joy was set on us, on the sons of men, long before we existed. This woman standing at the gate is not an abstract virtue wearing a robe. Rather, she casts light and glory on God, the magnificent Creator of wisdom, who chose to enter humanity and, through salvation, enabled us to receive the invitation of wisdom. Then, Wisdom’s gaze comes back down from the horizon and rests upon us directly, and what she says next is a mother’s plea, because she knows how it ends for those who ignore her.

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children, for blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the LORD; but he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.” Proverbs 8:32-36

To ignore Wisdom is not a neutral, harmless choice—it is choosing death and destruction. Our enemy always presents a louder, faster, and more emotionally satisfying solution. The flesh calls from the same gate, promising the same rewards and delivering…none of them.

But this woman, Wisdom, keeps her word every single time.

My friend, God’s wisdom and the mind of Christ are available to every born again believer. Hide it in your heart. Make it the baseline truth from which your mind operates. Wisdom’s promises are waiting to bless your life in more ways than you can imagine!

Prayer:

Father, teach me to hear Your voice above the noise of my own feelings and the pull of my flesh. I want to be found living in Your wisdom for Your glory and turning every circumstance into an opportunity to bring eternal life and blessings to those around me. Teach me Your ways, O Lord, and help me to walk in the way of wisdom.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
