After Nearly 250 Years, Is The Era Of “Self-Evident” Truth Over?

Share

truth self evident

Perhaps the most well-known sentence in the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, is: “We hold these TRUTHS to be SELF-EVIDENT, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

But what happens when people no longer believe in the Creator? What happens when we have no unwavering standard of TRUTH? Don’t people forget WHO they are and WHERE they came from? Don’t they forget WHY they are here? They must create their own truth. WHERE does this new “truth” come from? Can truth be based upon experiences that are devoid of science, reason or God??? But isn’t this exactly what is going on in our nation today? People believe what they want to about themselves (irrespective of what God’s Word says or even scientific evidence); and thus, their belief IS “truth.” Anyone who does not believe in their new “truth” is canceled or shouted off of the stage.

In an era of social media, misinformation, disinformation, “fake news,” and extreme partisanship, what “truths” can be considered “self-evident?”

The information is now shaped by algorithms, platform designs, crowd-sourcing, and disinformation campaigns. Is it still possible to have—a shared set of facts or self-evident truths—or are we all resigned to writing our own personalized reality each day which is curated from fragments of information scattered across the web? Are we left to drift in a constantly shifting reality, desperate to find ample justifications for what WE imagine is “self-evident?”

What will happen to a civilization with no unchanging and foundational truths?

Well, we see it. Anxiety and depression are through the roof. People are desperate and hopeless. Dissatisfaction is at an all-time high. Proven scientific facts about DNA are ignored in favor of feelings. Basic Biblical truths (like—love God and love others) which have provided solid foundations for governments for thousands of years are being rejected. Our very existence, which is so critically tied to the acknowledgment of facts and time-tested truth, is collapsing. My friend, we are living in very tumultuous times.

But for born again, Bible-believing Christians, it is a time of GREATEST opportunity!

The light is always brighter when the darkness is at its darkest. When we live out the fruits of God’s Spirit—”love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control,” of which the Bible makes it clear “against such there is no law.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‬‬ In other words, a lifestyle directed by God’s Spirit speaks truth that is universal and is “self-evident” to each human being. We ALL KNOW what real love and kindness looks like—right? There is no valid argument against the easily recognizable fruits of God’s goodness except—to deny He exists. My friend…

only a blind man denies the existence of light.

Indeed, those who are blinded to the truth of God’s Word, are so, because they have chosen to ignore the knowledge of Himself that He placed inside of them when He created them. The Bible says:

What may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they KNEW God, they did NOT glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened

Professing to be wise, they became fools.

Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭19‬-‭22‬

‭‭My friend, to be light, we must draw close to God and live out His values, common sense, and integrity which was the foundation that made our country a great light to the world. God is the source of ALL light.

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” ‭‭‬

I John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬-‭6

When we are led by Christ, we become part of His promise:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Mathew 5:14‬)

When we know Jesus as Savior and LORD, we know the most important foundational truth.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” ~Jesus ‭‭

John‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬

If you have been born again, then you are a steward of the Gospel, which is the POWER of GOD unto salvation. The gift of salvation is the key to human enlightenment, for it brings to life the soul and spirit, and enables us to know the truth and be set free from the darkness.

  1. How do I learn to trust God again when I truly think and feel that I have been betrayed and abandon? God say that He won’t leave or forsake us. But circumstances truly appear to contradict that. This is something that I’ve spoken with others wiser than me. Yet no real answer provided. In the end, I’ve just ended up angry at the betrayal.

    1. I am sorry you feel betrayed and abandoned. It’s hard to answer this question without knowing more about your circumstances. I imagine the Apostle Paul could have also felt that way when he was beaten, stoned almost to death and imprisoned for years—all because of his stance on the Gospel. But, he used all his circumstances as an opportunity to share the Gospel, indeed, he wrote Ephesians, Philippians (the joy letter), Colossians and Philemon from jail. The feeling of abandonment is real for sure (Jesus prayed from the cross, “My God, My God, Why has thou forsaken me?” The Father had to leave Jesus so He could remain righteous while Jesus paid for the sins of the whole world. He was forsaken so we would never be! I can tell you from personal experience that the times I’ve felt far from God are the times I was either in an intense spiritual battle and not allowing God to fight it for me, or I was not living in obedience to His Word. God promises us to never leave us or forsake us.
I hope this helps…you can also search my website for answers if it helps! The video series on the Basic Bible concepts is foundational for drawing close to God. Blessings and prayers, Kimberly

  2. Kimberly, Thank you for this article, it speaks truth as to the challenges that Gods’s children are facing in today’s society. I believe that todays Christian’s need to be on guard and ready to defend God’s Word and His truth’s. We as Christians need to be speaking “TRUTHS” as we put on the Armour of God. I keep hearing many Christians say not to worry, we know how the story ends; the Battle has already been won! i get that, yes that is how the story ends. But….. I struggle with the statement somewhat, is this a pass for so many Christians to sit on the sidelines and not get in the Battle to defend God’s Word and His Beautiful creation of a world that is being turned upside down?

    1. Thanks for your question…the whole point of putting on the armour of God is to engage in spiritual battle. This necessarily involves our body because without physical life we cannot engage with this world. Blessings, sweet friend!
