I’m one of those weirdos who like a sweaty workout—whether it’s lifting in the gym, running sprints on a trail, hauling hay, yard work, or a long hike—I absolutely love physical activity. But, after my last bout of COVID and the accompanying prolonged fatigue, I have been forced to curb my physical exertion. I can’t push myself too hard or I get lightheaded. It’s very frustrating! There is a lesson here for me:
Allow God to give me peace about what I CAN’T do.
God has also been teaching me the priceless value of spiritual fitness.
The spiritual part of me (soul and spirit) is the eternal part; meanwhile, my body is on a fast downhill slide towards death.
“All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
I Peter 1:24-25
An obsession with being physically fit—to the neglect of the soul—is like building sand castles at low tide.
God has given us a much more blessed and eternal purpose!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”
I Peter 1:3-4
Are you living with a passion for the incorruptible inheritance that you can build??? When you do, your focus is on building God’s Heavenly kingdom within the hearts of people—rather than focusing on stuff that will pass away. The care of physical things is placed into eternal perspective. We take care of physical things enough to represent and glorify God but not to the extent any of it becomes our “god.”
We need to ask God to give us a balance of—body, soul and spirit—that best represents His glory!
When our whole heart is to give 100% of ourselves to God; He leads us to live a balanced life. We live in love and we give others hope of the wonders they can possess which—death and aging cannot defeat. Others are drawn to the spirit within us instead of the flesh that clothes us. When we give God 100% of our time, passion and resources, He captures our heart and imagination and through us—He draws people to Himself.
Ah, my friend, loving God passionately will keep you physically AND spiritually fit!
