Many of my readers ask me to explain HOW to hear God. My first question to them is: “How much are you reading and studying His Word?” His Word is supernatural because it is the embodiment of Jesus. John 1:1-5 plainly states:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
When we read God’s Word, we are directly connecting with Jesus!
But THIS answer is not surprising, right? However, there is ANOTHER reason for spiritual silence and it may surprise you as much as it did me. It is…
UNTHANKFULNESS TO GOD!
Unthankfulness breeds spiritual silence because it lures us away from God. The Bible says,
“Although they knew [about] God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
(Romans 1:21)
Unthankfulness to God makes us fools who are stumbling through life in the spiritual silence of darkness.
To varying degrees, this applies to both believers and unbelievers. We aren’t talking about simply a failure to thank God for our food or other physical blessings. Rather, it is the failure to understand that He alone, is responsible for everything we ARE, all we HAVE and the FREEDOM Christ purchased for us.. Thus, we fail to yield our entire life to Him as evidence of our thankfulness. Unthankfulness begins in the heart and draws us into a downward spiral towards the slum of unrighteousness. (Romans 1:21-32) Ultimately, my friend, unthankfulness will steal your freedom and leave you in the silence of darkness.
Conversely, how does THANKFULNESS draw us closer to God?
The more we give God thanks for EVERYTHING, the more we know just how dependent we are upon Him. Independence from God was the original sin in the Garden. It SEPARATED us from God. It still does. Basic unthankfulness is the belief that we can do life better without Him. However, when we live in constant thankfulness to God, it draws us into His presence and tunes us into His Spirit. We are supernaturally enlightened. The light of His presence enables us to internalize the wisdom of His Word, which is THE lamp to our feet and THE light to our path. (Psalms 119:105) In fact, we will hear His Spirit speak to us even in….our experiences in Creation and interactions with other people.
We were created for God’s glory. When we realize that both our physical and spiritual life are gifts from God, we become enlightened by the wisdom of God’s Spirit. We desire for our life to be a gift for His glory, rather than being chained by our own desires. Sin is—anything that separates us from God. Jesus said,
“Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(John 8:34b, 36)
What we say, where we go, who we choose as friends, what we choose to put in our minds, our goals, our choice of career—everything should be an offering of thankfulness and praise back to our generous God who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us!!!
To live in thankfulness towards God is to live free and—supernaturally enlightened!
