Today is a day our family celebrates the birth of the sweetest, wisest, and strongest woman I know. First, let me say this—if you’ve met my mother, you’ve seen Jesus. Pages and pages of script cannot contain the amazingness of my mother’s big life, but let me see if I can give you a glimpse of her in one long, stream-of-consciousness paragraph…
She is wise but she would never say she is—in fact, her wisdom is often given with a twist of self-deprecating humor. I’ve NEVER heard my mother brag about herself—even though her walk with Christ has profoundly touched so many people—and still is! Her words are kind and sweet. [I can’t remember ever hearing her say even ONE mean thing—that’s got to be some kind of history-breaking record, right?] Talking with mom makes me feel like God is smiling inside me. At the drop of a hat, she will cry tears of compassion. [It’s so profound I often pray for God to give me this kind of strong empathy for others.] Her presence brings peace to the room. She cares for the downtrodden and values the people no one else values—feeding them at her table, baking them a pie, spending her time with them, etc. She loves her children fiercely—AND she does the same for anyone else’s kiddos. [Mom and dad were foster parents for many years.] I can barely remember any times she was angry —and even then, she didn’t yell—she cried. She works harder than a 20 year old college student with three jobs! She is busier than any woman I know yet—she faithfully spends time with God, attends church, and is a prayer warrior! Indeed if you’re reading this devotional—you might just be in her little black and white prayer notebook! I could go on, but I’ll say this to sum it up…
My mother is the most extraordinary and beautiful woman I know!
#LifeGoals right???
Although mom has never attained a professional degree, she is a pro at what’s MOST important—love, wisdom, compassion, and mercy.
Mom would tell you that all her best qualities come from God. It’s no surprise that the Bible is her favorite book. Her life—is proof that this is true. If you want to know what this verse LOOKS LIKE in a mere mortal…get to know my mom:
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:7
She is the virtuous woman spoken of in Proverbs whose children and grandchildren glorify God because of the influence of her life.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies…Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
Proverbs 31:10, 28-30
I know a virtuous woman, whose price is far above rubies, and—she is making an eternal difference in the history of mankind. My mother is changing the future of so many—including me. She inspires me to grow in my relationship with God—because I see how He is the soul satisfying well-spring of her life.
Thank you, Mom, for showing me what it looks like to live humbly, lovingly, beautifully, graciously, wisely, and supremely confident in who God made me. When I grow up, I want to be just like you!
If you know my mom, wish her a big Happy Birthday.
