I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called. (Ephesians 4:1)
My mother, Lynn, was a guest on our October 20, 2026, podcast because her perspective on vocation is truly exemplary. You see, the world defines our vocation by a job title. I have had several in my lifetime—attorney, writer, mother, singer, and songwriter—and I’ve often placed more importance upon these titles and allowed them to define me more than I should have. God is so good to patiently continue to transform my thinking in this area. My mom is an inspiration! She has been a mother, teacher, assistant youth leader, foster parent trainer, restaurant owner, and school cafeteria assistant…just to name a few. But her life has been a consistent reminder that God does not define “vocation” the way the world does. Underneath every hat my mother has ever worn is the one vocation that never changed. And, even at age 82—not only has she never retired—she doesn’t even want to!
From her, I have learned that my most important vocation is to glorify God as an ambassador of the Good News!
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:20)
When we are ambassadors for Christ, we are representing Him. The world-based vocations we have—teacher, dad, lawyer, firefighter, scientist—are simply like military postings from which we perform our service to God. Paul explained to the Ephesians:
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
So, for example, my law practice is a posting from which to carry the Gospel. How I represent God in the office and in court matters for eternal reasons. His glory is my greatest purpose…not making money. Being a granny, a writer, and a podcaster should have the exact same mission. I am not an ambassador for Kimberly in any of these positions.
My most important vocation has never been the practice of law, being a mother, or even a christian singer—they are merely postings for the same mission as an ambassador for Christ. Sometimes the postings are temporary—like being a mother to littles. But changing posts does not lessen the importance of our mission. It just gives God an opportunity to grow our very individualized gifts.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:6-8)
None of those gifts are the mission itself. They are simply the equipment issued for carrying out the mission in a given post. Peter names the objective underneath all of them:
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:10-11)
“That in all things God may be glorified.”
The absolutely beautiful truth is that the objective for our most important vocation does not diminish with age in the way every other vocation eventually does. The Bible promises:
The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing. (Psalm 92:12-14)
My mom is living proof of that verse. Her post has changed many times, but her commission has not. And Paul reminds Timothy that our great commission is timeless:
Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. (2 Timothy 1:9)
The calling of ambassadorship, which carries divine purpose, was issued to every born again believer before time began. It’s not tied to fatherhood, a law license, a social media platform, or even a ministry title. These positions are mere posts where God has stationed us to carry out His eternal assignment. The posting may change, but the mission does not!
When we are an ambassadors for Christ, no matter how small our earthly positions may seem—our heavenly mission is the greatest mission on earth.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for commissioning me as Your ambassador. Inspire me through Your Spirit to take each mission seriously because the eternal life of those around me depends upon how well others see You in me. Lord, may I glorify You in all I do today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
