“You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them by Your strength.” Exodus 15:13
After the crossing of the Red Sea and the destruction of the Egyptian army, Moses, standing on the far shore with two million former slaves behind him, sang to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him…
The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is His name… Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. In the greatness of Your majesty You overthrow Your adversaries; You send out Your fury, it consumes them like stubble…
Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them by Your strength.” (Exodus 15:1–2, 3, 6–7, 11, 13)
This was the pure worship of a man who had lived through an unforgettable deliverance experience of deliverance with God. He watched God dismantle the most powerful empire on earth on behalf of a people who had nothing, owned nothing, and could do nothing for themselves. The song was about the deep, abiding presence of God overcoming the enemy. Those two million people standing behind Moses on the shore were slaves that morning. In a single night, God set them free.
If we are born again, that is our story too.
Every human who sins becomes a member of the family of slaves and is owned by a master far more insidious than any human master. We have three masters—the devil, the flesh, and the culture of this world. Before we are set free, we are driven by cravings, fears, and patterns that cannot be broken by willpower alone. The Egyptian army is not made up of horses and chariots—it is addiction, bitterness, shame, pride, and the relentless bent of our flesh toward self-destruction.
But Jesus is our Deliverer because He paid the ultimate price to purchase our freedom from slavery.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
The same God who drowned Pharaoh’s army in the sea throws our sin into the depths of His own mercy when we are born again. Christ didn’t just forgive us—He freed us. Jesus said:
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
People freed from slavery have a song in their hearts! I’ll be honest with you—for a long time, I didn’t have a song. I knew Bible doctrine, but the living, breathing, daily experience of God’s power moving through my life—I did not know it. I was on the other side of the sea of redemption but still living in the fear and chains of the sin from which Jesus had set me free from. What I’m learning is that the deep and abiding experience of the freedom God has given me is directly connected to God’s presence.
The enemy knows this. That is precisely why he works so hard to keep us distracted, distant, and spiritually numb. My friend, a believer who is genuinely close to God, is a devastating force against darkness. The enemy does not want us to live in this realization:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Do you have a freedom song? Not a playlist. I mean a living testimony of God’s specific, personal, powerful movement in your life that makes praise the most natural response you have? I never thought about it until now, and it really encouraged me to seek His presence with everything in me.
God’s presence is our greatest inspiration!
🎶You split the water, You broke my chains, You called me out of my deepest shame. The enemy chased me, You made a way; I’m standing free in the light of day.
🎶Who is like You, Lord—pure and holy? Who is like You—glorious and true? All of my life, my song, my story—every breath belongs to You.
🎶You’re my strength when the enemy surrounds me, Your my song when the night is long. No chain can hold me, no fear can bind me—Close to You is where I belong.
🎶Who is like You, Lord—pure and holy? Who is like You—glorious and true? All of my life, my song, my story—every breath belongs to You.
Prayer:
Father, make me Your song and help my life be a testimony to the specific ways You have moved in my life. Forgive me for the times I’ve gone back to the slavery of sin. Keep me close to You and help me see the goodness and greatness of Your ways. Drown the enemy in the flood of Your mercy. Make my life a song that points everyone around me straight to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
