Throughout history, ancient and modern voices have celebrated inner strength as if it is an innate human resource. Ancient sages like Marcus Aurelius urged, “You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Lao Tzu declared, “Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” In modern times, Mahatma Gandhi affirmed, “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” Anna Freud observed, “I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.”
While these slogans promoted self-reliance and personal empowerment, their lives reveal the profound frailty and limits of human self-sufficiency.
Marcus Aurelius succumbed to illness at age 58 during a military campaign. Lao Tzu vanished—his fate unknown—shrouded in obscurity rather than triumphant mastery. Gandhi was assassinated at 78 in 1948, and all his mastery was unable to prevent a violent opposition. Anna Freud died in 1982 after an overdose of sleeping pills.
These examples highlight a crucial truth that human “inner strength,” is finite and insufficient.
The Bible reminds us that “apart from [Christ] you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Relying solely on human effort is often “in vain.” (Psalm 127:1) True, enduring fortitude flows not from our limited selves but from God—through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13) This invites a shift from fragile self-sufficiency to humble dependence on God, where genuine inner strength is discovered in our surrender to Him.
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel utterly powerless. Headlines scream of escalating wars, moral decay, rampant wickedness, political failures, and economic uncertainty. Natural disasters, cultural divisions, and personal struggles, leave us feeling overwhelmed and helpless against forces far beyond our control. It staggers our sense of hope! In such a climate, human strength is inadequate. God offers a radically different view! If you are born-again, you are not powerless.
Far from it.
Within every born again child of God resides a supernatural power that eclipses ALL darkness; in fact, it’s the same power that conquered our greatest enemy—death itself. This power is not theoretical—it is alive, active, and available right now. The promise of the gift of God’s power is affirmed in this magnificent prayer of Paul the Apostle:
“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.” Ephesians 1:17-21
Isn’t that exciting???
The same resurrection power that shattered the grave and raised Jesus Christ from the dead now dwells in every born-again believer. This is supernatural and inexhaustible power! It’s greater than any force of nature or cruelty of mankind.
Before we are born again, we are spiritually dead and powerless against the forces of evil. All human ability and strength originate from God’s creative hand: “It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves.” (Psalms 100:3) Before we are born again, our soul and spirit are lifeless and unable to tap into God’s power. The Bible says:
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” Ephesians 2:1
When we are born again, our soul and spirit are made alive in Christ:
“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…” Colossians 2:13
The Holy Spirit takes up residence, infusing us with resurrection power.
“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Romans 8:11
That’s REAL power! This is the same power that upholds the universe (Hebrews 1:3). Jesus is the source of all light, life, and righteousness (John 1:4) We are promised God’s divine power:
“His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.” 2 Peter 1:3
Are you using it?
My friend, being born again is like being plugged into the ultimate power source. We are connected to Christ Himself. But staying “plugged in” and keeping that power flowing requires ongoing surrender and sanctification. We access this power through loving obedience. (John 14:15) We must abide in Christ and know that without Him we are powerless.
“He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” John 15:15
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10-12
This power is not primarily for spectacular physical miracles (though God may grant them). Its highest purpose is eternal—bringing lost souls to Christ and glorifying God. (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19-20) Today, embrace the resurrection power within you. You are no longer powerless if you have been freed from the power of sin and have been made alive in Christ. You are empowered by the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. Stay closely connected to Him, and HE promises that HIS strength will flow through you and accomplish great and mighty things!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the exceeding greatness of Your power that raised Jesus from the dead and now lives in me through Your Spirit. Forgive me for living as if I am still dead in sin or relying on my own strength. Thank You for making me alive in Christ and plugging me into the source of all life, light, and power. Your love is the most powerful force on earth. Help me to live in it. Help me abide in You daily through prayer, hiding Your Word in my heart, loving obedience, fellowship with believers, and being a loving and bold witness. Strengthen me to be engaged in this spiritual warfare. May Your power flow through me to bring souls to Christ and glorify Your name forever. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
