What Is The Gospel?

The Gospel is not a religious philosophy, a moral improvement program, or a spiritual lifestyle choice. It is the good news from God—that Christ came to earth; lived a sinless life; died to pay for the sins of all mankind; was resurrected and won victory over death, and reigns supreme. Christ and the plan of redemption are the BIG story of the entire Bible.

The promise of the Savior was not a late addition to the Bible—it was God’s plan from the beginning. After humanity chose sin in the Garden, God declared that the coming Deliverer would crush the serpent even as He Himself was wounded. (Genesis 3:15) The prophets foretold a Redeemer who would be born of a virgin. (Isaiah 7:14) He would come from David’s royal line. (Jeremiah 23:5) He would be pierced for our sins and bear our iniquity. (Isaiah 53:5–6) Yet He would ultimately rule with everlasting dominion. (Daniel 7:13–14)

Every Old Testament sacrifice, every altar, every prophecy, every king and every priest was a shadow pointing forward to Jesus.

In the New Testament, the promise steps into history. “When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son.” (Galatians 4:4) Jesus declared that the Scriptures testified of Him. (John 5:39) The apostles proclaimed that all the promises of God are fulfilled in Him. (2 Corinthians 1:20) Jesus did not merely fulfill prophecy—He completed the redemptive story of God. His perfect life satisfied the Law, His death satisfied justice, His resurrection secured victory, and His ascension declared His kingship. Now He reigns with all authority in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18)

The Gospel is not only an invitation of redemption for humanity; it is also a proclamation that Christ has conquered sin, death, and Satan, and that He reigns as King.

My friend, the Gospel is the greatest treasure we carry with us as we walk through this sin-torn world. We need to know how to share it with the dying world around us before they step into eternity. Eternity is a long time. Hell is real. We need to be able to explain the Gospel, which is their only hope.

Before the Gospel can save anyone; they must understand their need for salvation. We are sinners, unable to save ourselves. Scripture says that there is none righteous, no, not one. (Romans 3:10) All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Our problem is not simply moral weakness—it is spiritual deadness. A dead person cannot make himself alive. Indeed, self-righteousness is one of the greatest barriers to salvation because God cannot save people who think they are already good enough. We cannot reconcile ourselves to God through religion, effort, morality, or sincerity. Christ did not come to make us better—He came to rescue us entirely. He lived the righteous life we could not live, died the death we deserved to die, and rose again so we could receive eternal life.

Salvation is not achieved by human effort—it is received by grace through faith.

Even repentance and faith are not human achievements but gifts of God’s Spirit that we simply exercise. “For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9) Repentance is a gift—the desire to turn from sin and self-rule. Supernatural faith is also a gift—like night vision goggles—that enables us to see the truth of the Gospel and believe in Christ alone as Savior and King. Scripture declares, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31)

This is the work of the Gospel in us.

God designed us to have a relationship with Himself—for His glory, much like a painting glorifies the artist. But sin separates us from Him. We cannot save ourselves. Jesus died for our sins and rose again, taking upon Himself our judgment. God grants repentance and faith, and when we turn from sin and trust in Christ alone, surrendering our lives to Him as Lord and King, He forgives us, adopts us, fills us with His Spirit, and gives us eternal life. If you have never been born again, today is the day of salvation!  You can pray:

“Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and place my faith in You. I surrender my life to You — my Savior and King. I trust You for eternal life.”

This prayer itself does not save—it is what happens in your heart. Christ saves those who truly believe and surrender 100% of all they are to Him. My friend, all who repent and believe are instantly transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His Son. (Colossians 1:13) This is God’s message for the world. This is our hope. This is the Gospel, and we are entrusted to take it to the ends of the earth.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭10‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, give us eyes to see people as You see them—souls in need of grace, not interruptions to our schedule. Put the Gospel at the forefront of our thoughts, on our lips, and in our conduct, so that all that we think, say, and do points unmistakably to Jesus. Give us courage when fear tempts us to stay quiet, wisdom to speak truth with love, and humility to remember that salvation is Your work, not ours. Break our hearts for what breaks Yours. Keep us mindful that this world is passing, but eternity is forever. May we live each day ready, willing, and obedient to share the good news of repentance, forgiveness, and new life in Christ with a lost and dying world. For Your glory and for the salvation of many, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
