Thy Kingdom Come; Thy Will Be Done

Share

Jesus in the clouds symbolizing God's Kingdom.

After we have prayed the first two portions of this prayer we are: 1. Confident in the love of our Father; and 2. In awe of the great privilege it is to live gloriously for God. Jesus next directs us to pray:

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:10‬

The first time I considered what this meant—I did NOT like it. Because…

…I want to do—what I want to do!

The thought that I had to do God’s will INSTEAD of what I wanted to do sounded like a pretty crappy life. However, that’s because I did not know God for who He is. That’s one reason I have been working through this prayer so carefully—to align myself with the TRUTH about who God is so I know who I’m praying to.

God is wonderful beyond words!!!

I had never before worked through the Lord’s prayer like I have in the two previous days. Thus, why would I have EVER wanted to do the will of a God I didn’t know? I had denatured Him and thought Him to be a bit of a tyrant or even like a senile old man. This is why it’s so critical to wrap our mind around the great majesty and love of God. With this mindset, we are EAGER to be in His will!

So let us begin…

Oh Lord, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…

“Lord, Your kingdom is not observable like the kingdoms of this earth; but rather, it is within Your people.” (‭‭Luke‬ ‭17:20-21) May the glory of Your kingdom shine from my life so those in slavery will long for the great freedom of Your salvation. May Your people who are called by Your name rise up in love and feed the lost world with the fruits of Your Spirit. May truth be shared with a strong measure of love, joy, peace, and strength. Strengthen the church to be beautiful in Your sight and to draw all souls to You!

Oh Lord, build Your kingdom inside my soul.

“Lord, You are great, above all gods. You do what You please—in heaven and on earth; in the seas and in all deep places. You cause the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; You make lightning for the rain; You bring the wind out of Your treasuries.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭135:5-7‬) Oh Lord, Your power over the elements is absolute. As the winds and waves submit to You, help me to also submit every element of myself to Your will. I give you my heart, my family, my job, my assets, and my time…use them to usher Your kingdom into the hearts of people. Have Your way with me.

Oh Lord, like the majestic sunrise, work your wonders through my life.

“Oh Lord, may I be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that I may walk worthy of You, fully pleasing to You, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of You; strengthened with all might, according to Your glorious power, with patience and joy.” (‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:9-11) Lord, remind me that every choice I make today is powerful and it WILL affect the people around me—either FOR Your kingdom or AGAINST it. Guard my heart, my lips, and my actions. Remind me to be in communication with You so I am constantly strengthened by Your Spirit.

Oh Lord, fill me with Your Spirit so it flows into everyone around me!

“Not My will, but Thine, be done.” (‭‭Luke‬ ‭22:42‬) Oh dear God, as I think of Jesus submitting Himself to You, willing to bear pain and terror greater than I can comprehend, give me perspective about Your will for my life. I know because of Jesus, You will never leave me or forsake me. You will never give me more than YOU can handle. Jesus submitted Himself to Your Will because of His great love for You and for me; therefore, because His love has worked within me, I desire to submit myself to You.

Lord, strengthen me to do Your will!

Thank you, Lord, for giving me the honor of being in Your service.

This section can also include intercessory prayer for others. We are going to address this later in the short book about prayer that will be released soon. So now we have reminded ourselves of who we are, who God is, and how important our purpose is, we are in a place to petition Him for our needs. We have a much better perspective about WHAT we need AND we know we have the STANDING to ask.

Isn’t this exciting???

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
