“Worship” is passionate adoration or devotion towards someone (or something). For example, to “worship” another person means they’re never far from our thoughts. Their presence is more important than anything else in our life. Does that make sense? We save our best energy and effort for what we worship—right? Here are some examples from my own life:
When sports were my great passion, I would structure my entire week around practices and games. I worked…so I could play even if it meant sacrificing more important things. A great tournament was the pinnacle of my joy.
When making money was my great passion, I sacrificed family, God, friends, and leisure time to be in the office slaving away for the almighty dollar.
When a man was my great passion, I would drop everything to accommodate him. He was always in my thoughts. He was the reason I would discipline myself to look good. In fact, he was my greatest reason for getting out of bed in the morning.
I was a slave to these things and ultimately they were a catalyst for so much failure and disappointment because…
Worship of the wrong thing is an intensely destructive force!
But worship of God is even more powerful and—it’s the only healthy form of worship!!!. My dear friend, we were created for worship and so, just as a bird must fly…we MUST worship!
We must choose to worship the way our Creator made us to worship!
In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, we are given direct instructions about WHO should be the object of our greatest worship:
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:3
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
Matthew 22:37-38
The worship of God is the only worship that will not destroy us. God created us for a relationship with Him. When He is the center of our life, we are at optimal function—mentally, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Our fear and anxiety are in check because we KNOW that the ONE we love the most will NEVER leave us or forsake us. (Deuteronomy 31:8) Our worship of God draws us close to His presence. He is our greatest security. God IS perfect love and HE casts out fear. (1 John 4:18)
Do you know just how much God does for you and how much He desires you? He died to reconcile you to a relationship with Himself. Take the first step, by accepting His GIFT OF SALVATION. If you are already His child, ask Him to help you desire HIM more than you desire anything. This may sound foolish, but I pray for this almost every day. I know myself. I know how easily I get pulled away by the world and the flesh and get all upside down. So I pray, “God help me desire You more than I desire anyone or anything else.” I truly think He loves this prayer!!! He longs to swoop in and take me by the hand and lead me into His perfect dance!
If you are anxious orliving in fear—there is a reason! Just as we should have a healthy fear of poisonous snakes, our anxiety is a sign that we’re missing something HUGE! Turn to God. There is nothing in this world that will satisfy you like His love, joy, peace, contentment, wisdom, and strength!
God’s presence is the only addiction that will ever satisfy you.
When you grow used to God’s presence, you realize that even one day without Him is hellish. You won’t ever want to go back to living without Him.
“You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.”
Nehemiah 9:6
