The Holy Spirit is more than a Rumble Strip

Share

rumble strip Holy Spirit

“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.”
Ezekiel 36:27

In a recent sermon, Pastor Mark Morrison used a powerful illustration comparing the Holy Spirit to rumble strips on a road. Those grooved lines on the highway warn us when we are drifting toward danger or crossing boundaries we shouldn’t. The more I thought about it, the more God started writing His supplemental commentary in my mind. He’s good like that!

The Word of God is our driver’s manual for life. It teaches us how to navigate the roads, avoid hazards, and reach our destination safely. When we’re learning to drive or when we decide not to follow the rules, the Holy Spirit is consistent in warning us—like rumble strips on a road. But the more we study God’s Word and the more we desire to obey, the more the Spirit takes the wheel. With Him as navigator, giving daily direction and real-time guidance, our lifes travel far beyond the destination we had planned.

We don’t need the rumble strips as often because we desire to steer carefully on the path He has laid out for us. The Bible explains:

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

When we walk in the Spirit, we don’t want to live according to our old sinful ways. Our life takes on a different shape. Our character, words, and actions start to reflect the One who now lives within us. We become steady, Spirit-led drivers—no longer swerving recklessly, but traveling with purpose and precision. Walking in the Spirit keeps us from becoming wreckage on the side of the road—or causing other folks to crash and burn. In fact, when we are led by the Spirit, we are clearly identifiable as children of God.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:14

Being led by the Spirit isn’t just a feeling—it’s a lifestyle. It means we let the Spirit guide how we think, what we say, and how we live. It means we follow His voice, even when our flesh wants to take a shortcut. And sometimes, it means we need to be reminded of the rumble strip warnings loud and clear, pulling us back before we wreck our own life or someone else’s.

My friend, the Spirit leads us into truth. He doesn’t guide us based on our emotions, our past, or our preferences. He reveals truth from God’s Word and truth about what’s ahead. His leading is never random—it’s specific, timely, and always in alignment with Scripture. The Bible explains:

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” John 16:13

When we listen to the Spirit, our journey changes. We begin to see miracles, divine appointments, and life transformations. Our life becomes a testimony of God’s power and direction. But to be led by the Spirit, we must place Him in control of our life. We must value His direction more than our own desires. We must commit to making God our center.

The Holy Spirit is not just our correction—He is our connection to the abundant life.

Reflection Thought

Are you driving on the edge of a wreck and constantly hearing the rumbles of danger? Place the Spirit in control through obedience to His word and He will guide you on an amazing journey.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for giving me the precious gift of Your Holy Spirit. I don’t want to live a life of reckless wandering. I want to walk in step with Your Spirit, hearing Your guidance and following Your lead. Teach me to love Your Word, to treasure Your voice, and to trust Your direction in every part of my life. Help me to respond quickly—whether You’re guiding me gently or giving me a warning. Lead me into all truth and keep me in the center of Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
