I don’t think we truly comprehend the greatness of God. If we did, we would live in much more joy and victory. We tend to focus on the greatness of our problems instead of the greatness of our God. I recently heard a sermon by Erik Whittaker, and he said:
“Do you tell God how big your PROBLEMS are, or do you tell your problems how big your GOD is?”
Remember yesterday’s devotional about the gift of God’s goodness? No matter what our circumstances, there is far more going RIGHT in our life than is going WRONG. Thus, the more we focus on the GREATNESS of God the more we can see the SMALLNESS of our problems. God has given us His Word to increase the knowledge of His greatness. Take the suffering of Job, for example. Amidst Job’s tragedy, God did NOT focus on Job’s PROBLEMS, rather He reminded Job of His GREATNESS. God said:
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth and issued from the womb; when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band; when I fixed My limit for it, and set bars and doors; when I said, “This far you may come, but no farther, and here your proud waves must stop!”
Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?
Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.
Have you entered the treasury of snow, or have you seen the treasury of hail, do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?
Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart? Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Job 38:3-13, 16-19, 22, 33-36, 41
God was encouraging Job to focus upon His greatness. Why? Because when we know His greatness, we will find peace even in the worst circumstances. The “head” knowledge of “greater is HE that is in me, than he that is in the world” becomes practical knowledge. (1 John 4:4) It changes the way we react. It changes the way we live.
God’s greatness gives us the gift of His perspective about all our circumstances.
“Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually, “The Lord be magnified!” But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.”
Psalms 40:16-17
