The other day, someone I dearly love was very angry with me. She was hurting for reasons completely unrelated to anything I had said or done, but her words still hurt. Later, I was complaining to God about why she didn’t trust my character enough to know that I only meant good for her. I mean, had I not proven my love to her over many years and thus, merited her trust???
God, was like “Girl, I totally get it.“
But God’s message to me hit home in a way I was not expecting. My experience with my friend was nothing compared to HIS experience with ME. I regularly doubt His character. For example, I ignore the commandments of His Word because I think I know better than He does and—doubt His character. I don’t—pray without ceasing, hide His Word in my heart, love Him more than I love anyone else—I doubt His character. I get angry with Him because things don’t work out the way I think they should—I doubt His character. Instead of waiting on Him; I run ahead. Instead of allowing Him to show me that path of peace; I troll for my own answers.
I’m sure it must wound God deeply to see my lack of trust in His character.
God’s character makes Him trustworthy and it is described in the Book of Jeremiah:
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.
Jeremiah 9:23-24
God is loving, righteous, and just [meaning, He will 100% make all wrongs right.] His dependability is grounded in His nature. So why should we trust His character?
- He can be trusted because He loves us more than we love ourselves. His love is 100% selfless.
- He can be trusted because He is always right about everything and nothing He does is clouded by sin [selfishness] or unrighteousness.
- He can be trusted because He will bring justice for every evil deed that is not covered by the blood of Christ.
Not only is God’s character [nature] impeccably trustworthy; equally important, He possesses the attributes to bring to pass what His nature requires. He is omniscient, omnipotent, and He never changes so He can carry out all He has promised us in His Word. For example, He has the ability to love billions of people [most of whom have chosen to reject Him] with the greatest love they have ever known. He loves them all at the same time. Simultaneously, He has the ability to provide them all with a life-sustaining environment. He knows when even the smallest creature dies. I could go on but…
Do you know anyone like God? Is there anyone like Him who is worthy of your greatest trust?
Jesus was born to die, so we could know Him—and live.
When we commit to know God for WHO He IS and not—who we think He is—we find our greatest love. We want to live in loving obedience to Him because we trust His character.
What an amazing gift it is to know the character of God!
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
2 Corinthians 5:21
