The more I study the nature and attributes of God, the more I realize how much I need to retrain my mind to truly know Him. I don’t want to think of God based on my feelings, assumptions, or what others say. Especially not what His enemies say about Him. I want to see Him for who His Word says He is.
Let’s be honest—the world doesn’t get God. Even many Christians have a distorted view. If we truly understood who He is, we would pursue Him with unstoppable passion.
Stop and ask yourself right now: What is your most predominant thought about God? Is He a harsh judge? A perfectionist? Distant and wrathful?
Scripture gives us the answer plainly about the dominant aspect of His nature:
“God is love.” 1 John 4:8
Love is not just something God does—it’s the dominant part of who He is. But this truth often gets buried beneath layers of wrong thinking. God is not only love but—He is so much more than we can imagine. We need His Word and His Spirit to teach us. To experience real intimacy with God, we must renew our minds and replace lies with truth.
How do we do that? We align our thoughts with Scripture. We talk about God and to God based on what His Word actually says about Him. One powerful tool is praying the Word of God back to Him. When we do, the Spirit begins to reshape our understanding of God’s heart. His true self becomes more than an idea—it becomes our reality.
Here are just a few prayers that have helped transform my view of God which you will recognize as coming from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Zephaniah 3:17 and Romans 5:8, 8:37-39:
- “Oh Lord, Your love has always been long-suffering toward me. Even when I wandered far from You, You remained faithful. Thank You for never giving up on me.”
- “Your love bears all things. You’ve carried the weight of my pain and never complained. You stayed when others left. Your arms are always open.”
- “Lord, Your love believes in me. You see Your image in me—even when I don’t. Help me see myself through Your eyes.”
- “Your love never fails. It quiets my soul and gives me peace. I’ve never known a love like Yours.”
- “I am persuaded that NOTHING can separate me from Your love—not death, life, powers, or anything in creation!”
This is who God really is for those who are His born-again children! Let this truth become the foundation of your life, your thoughts, your prayers, and your worship, and your life will never be the same!
Reflection Question:
Can you identify a wrong belief about God that you need to retrain your mind about? Any thought about God that keeps you from passionately pursuing Him is robbing you of your best life!
