If you read a book written by an engineer who designed and built the space shuttle, would you discredit the author because you couldn’t understand his book? The space shuttle has more than 2.5 million parts, including almost 230 miles of wire, more than 1,060 plumbing valves and connections, over 1,440 circuit breakers, and more than 27,000 insulating tiles and thermal blankets. In 8 ½ minutes after launch, the shuttle accelerates from zero to about nine times as fast as a rifle bullet, or 17,400 miles per hour. The designers were brilliant. Could we watch the wonder of the space shuttle launch into space and be so foolish as to challenge the validity of the designer—because we don’t understand how it all works?
Yet, many read the Bible, don’t understand it, and challenge the sovereignty of God.
God designed a universe so vast, powerful and complex that man cannot even view the entirety of it, or replicate the smallest component of the life that bursts forth all around us. Is it a great surprise that His Word would also be an intellectual challenge? Of course it is! I mean, would you want to worship a “god” who is as intellectually limited as you are? We are but mere humans, unable to create even one speck of matter from nothing. We are incapable of creating even one living cell!
When we consider the marvelous complexity of the universe, we have clues about the magnificence of God.
The engineers who designed the space shuttle are experts in their subject and we wouldn’t dream of challenging them. God is an expert at EVERYTHING—including us. One look at Creation, reveals God’s brilliance. If you think it’s challenging to read a book written by an engineer—well, it follows that it would be even more difficult to read a book written by the Creator of everything!
But God gives us an amazing tool for understanding His Word—a relationship with HIM!!!
When we are born again, our spirit is made alive and can communicate with God’s Spirit! Wow!!! Our spirit is enabled to be taught by GOD from His Word. We are ALIVE in Christ and have the ABILITY to comprehend His Word, much like becoming a space engineer would enable us to understand a book on the space shuttle. However, my friend, the wisdom of God’s Word is far deeper than any human scholarship! The Bible says:
“The natural man does not receive [or know] the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are SPIRITUALLY discerned.”
I Corinthians 2:14
Without the gift of salvation, we are unable to plunge the depths of God’s Word. Indeed, without the Spirit teaching us, the Bible seems full of—contradictions, fairy tales, and old-fashioned rules. But when we are filled with the Spirit of God, we are taught His supernatural truths. The Bible comes alive! It becomes our greatest source of wisdom. It satisfies our spiritual hunger and thirst. The Bible is our greatest love letter.
Know the Author and you will begin to understand the Book.
Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
But God has REVEALED them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Now we have received, NOT the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might KNOW the things that have been freely given to us by God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Corinthians 2:9-13
God’s Word comes alive when we know the Author and LOVE Him with all our heart, soul and mind!
