Today I read, “I am dying. I am dying dust writing to dying dust.” For an ER nurse, this was a revelation of pure beauty. It is a way to simultaneously convey both personal frailties, as well as the frailty of every other living human on the planet.
“Am I dying???” Is a question that I’ve been asked many times in my career. Each case is unique but I’ve always struggled with the question, because the truthful answer is, “Yes! We all are!” I wonder how much less time we would waste and how much more time we would invest for eternity if we knew the date of our death. I think we would ask:
So what? What’s the point of all of this?
We run the rat race. We make an effort to protect our planet. We may include some spirituality here and there if it fits into our narrative. We grind out trying to eat healthy and work out. We work, save, and invest for a future we may not live to see. The list goes on and on. Is this it?
What is the REAL point of our lives?
We are here, then we aren’t. Think about the last funeral you went to. Now think about the one before that. Do you often remember the person from the one before that? What percentage of the 7.8 billion people on earth even knew the deceased person, much less remember them regularly? These are harsh questions, but at some point in our lives, we must face this reality. We are all “dying dust”, so is there anything that will ever give our life meaning beyond basic survival and a few pleasures here and there?
There is great joy in knowing that God created us for an eternal purpose!
The Bible says:
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31
WHY did God create us? We were created to be supernaturally distinguished by bringing glory to Almighty God! The point of our existence is to reflect and celebrate our Creator. Just as a painting does not become priceless unless the artist is famous; we are nothing without God. There is no one more prominent or more worth knowing! The painting never existed until the artist created it.
Prior to creating a human, God created the world. He looked at all of creation and declared that it was good. He could have stopped there, but that was NEVER His intention! His plan was to have people share this perfect world with Him. He even made them in His Image, called them His children, AND GAVE THEM FREE WILL! He loved them with an incredible love. Yet, God knew what they would do. He knew the destruction that the ugliness of sin would work. Yet—He created them and loved them!
That is us! We are the “them.”
We are the “dying dust” that can’t seem to get it together and understand our glorious purpose. From the beginning, God knew our frailty and that we would choose to fall away from Him. He knew that we would hurt Him but He created us anyway. He gave us this incredibly beautiful world so full of life. Beyond that, why did He send His Son to redeem us after we sinned and continue to sin against Him??? Because from the beginning, He loved us. No matter what happened, or what it cost him, He would always love us as the most perfect Father. The world He created was perfect:
“And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
Genesis 1:31a
Everything was “good” until God made man, then he calls it “very good”. It was different and even better! Some translations read “supremely good”. God KNEW our potential for evil at the moment he created us. Yet He loved us. He knew about Nero, Stalin, Hitler, and even me. He knew it all, yet he loved and continues to love us. He knows our potential for good and for evil. But—in the end—He wins. He gives us the opportunity to play for the winning team.
Friends, we are all dying dust. Our time on earth is short. God’s massive opportunities lie before you today. Lest we miss out, we must get out of our comfort-seeking mentality and seek God’s will for our life. Our eternal potential is enormous! So, ask yourself:
- What are you doing TODAY that matters for eternity?
- What am I doing TODAY that will matter when I am no longer here?
- If TODAY is your last day on earth, will anyone remember you?
- WHAT will you be remembered for?
Will the memory of your life be how rich you were, how accomplished you were, your nice house or fast car or—your beauty and strength? When God is the center of our life, our life sows eternal seeds, to grow eternal fruit—that will be enjoyed long after our body is gone! Jesus gave us the proper eternal perspective when He said:
“Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:31-33
