How You Can Be Comforted By God

When you need comfort, who do you think of first? Perhaps it’s a spouse, friend, or a parent? For most of my Christian life, my first source of comfort has NOT been God. It’s ALWAYS been another person. This is a tough admission for someone who claims to be a Christian—right? Especially so, in light of what the Bible says about God’s ability to comfort us.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of ALL comfort, who comforts us in ALL our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

‭‭II Corinthians‬ ‭1:3-4‬‭

Wow! God is the God of ALL comfort. His ability to comfort is so powerful that even amidst our own trouble…we can also comfort others. That’s exactly what Jesus did WHILE He was suffering on the cross—taking care of His mother, and leading the thief hanging one the cross beside Him to salvation.

You may ask: “Kimberly, why didn’t YOU find the comfort of God for so many years?

Well, let me ask you this: “Have you ever tried to comfort a child who is kicking, screaming and resisting?” Or, “Have you ever tried to comfort and protect a child who is constantly running away from you?” You get the picture!

To experience God’s powerfully comforting Spirit, we must LIVE in His Spirit.

How can we expect God to comfort us if we are living in disobedience and continuing to stiff-arm Him? God does not force the comfort of His love on us! We can only expect to feel the full force of His comfort if we’re close to Him!

When we open our heart, kick out the sin, and let God in—we begin to experience His marvelous comfort. When we do, we NEVER want to let Him go! We begin to SEEK His will and LONG for His presence. We can’t get enough of Him.

When God’s presence is such a necessity that He is our greatest purpose—we experience His comfort in ALL circumstances.

God’s presence is so comforting, we want to lock the door and throw away the key. Living in God’s comfort makes the words of Psalm 23 OUR experience.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” ‭‭

Psalms‬ ‭23:1-4‬

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
