How We Become Restricted By Our Affections

Share

Boat stuck on shore

As I was reading the book of 2 Corinthians, I was just shocked to read:

“O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections. Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open.” ‭‭ ‬‬

2 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬-‭13‬

It is such a revelation to understand that we are often “restricted by our own affections!”

In other words what we love the most PREVENTS US from achieving God’s great plan for us. Wow—do we want to live RESTRICTED??? Paul goes on to identify HOW our affections limit us:

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?

2 Corinthians 6:14-16

When anything less than God becomes our greatest love or our greatest fear, then we are choosing to defeat ourselves. We are accomplishing FAR less than we were created to achieve. Remember, we can do ALL things through CHRIST—not—though any other resource! (Philippians, 4:13) Paul reminds us of the Old Testament promises that God Himself made:

For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Therefore,

“Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.”

“I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

2 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭16-‭18

We prevent ourselves from achieving our greatest accomplishments when we set our greatest affections on anything less than God.

But when God becomes our center, we achieve all the greatness He planned for us. He made plans for us before we were formed in our mother’s womb. God does our life much better than we do. His plans are greater than we can ask for or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20) Today, commit 100% of your time, your resources, your heart, all that you have or are—to HIM—and watch Him accomplish far greater things than you ever thought possible!

Set your greatest affection on God and you will be ALL He created you to be!
