Many of the people I meet in my law office have been crushed by disappointment. The life they are living is falling far short of the glorious life they had imagined for themselves! Oh, my dear friend, who among us has not been there? Wounded and discouraged by…a friend who rejected us, a choice which imprisoned us, a financial collapse, a child who has forsaken our love, or any situation that is so debilitating that it strikes even at the heart of our identity, or hits us so hard that we have no energy or zeal for life. We must recognize…
Anything we love more than we love God—has the power to crush us.
Yet we often set our greatest goals and ambitions on anything or anyone EXCEPT God and thus, we tightly embrace the very thing that will eventually crush us. There is only one love who will never crush us, and that is God. Yet, often we barely give Him a fraction of the time or energy that we give to things and the people who will disappoint us. We don’t have to live this way!!!
Through the gift of salvation, God has given us “living hope.”
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that DOES NOT FADE AWAY, reserved in heaven for you.”
I Peter 1:3-4
When Christ rose from the dead, He conquered eternal DEATH—which is the most tragic ending for any life. There is no hope for someone who dies without Christ. This is why it is so critically important to be born again! Jesus’ gift of salvation enables us to have hope that will NEVER fade away. Indeed, when Jesus is the center of even all our earthly hopes and dreams—we will never be crushed by disappointment because—we have hope in Him and He never fails.
Our greatest hope must be in Christ. We must make Him the greatest love of our life, so that all other loves fall in line. He, alone, possesses Divine wisdom, never-ending love, and supreme power. He gives us a hope that will not fail. Doesn’t it make sense to make God our greatest source of hope? He should be the center of our life instead of—our career, our relationships or money? Indeed the Bible reminds us:
“No king is saved by the multitude of an army; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a vain hope for safety; neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear [losing His presence is our greatest fear so we see that He remains the most important part of our life] Him, on those who HOPE in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord; HE is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we HOPE IN YOU.”
Psalms 33:16-22
When we love God first, we have such powerful hope that we are never afraid to love with all of our heart, soul, and mind .
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear.”
I John 4:18a
