How Much Must We Understand About God In Order To Believe In Him?

Share

Picture illustrates man rejecting what he doesn't understand

I’ve often heard people say there are so many contradictions in the Bible and so much they don’t understand about God that—it’s just easier to NOT believe in Him. But this reasoning reflects the double standard of our secular culture; that is, the dismissal of belief in God based on an inability to understand Him. Because…the same people who dismiss belief in God for lack of understanding are quick to place their faith in lesser things that they also don’t fully comprehend.

We ALL do it!

For example, will you refuse to drive your car just because you don’t fully understand how the engine works? Or, if you lack formal medical education, will this keep you from having a life-saving operation from a physician you’ve only met once? You see, we often write-off trusting God for a lot less than we do trusting in complete strangers, or even inanimate objects.

And…the great enemy of our soul has deceived us into believing that this is logical.

Thus, most people will reject Jesus as Savior, of whom even historical  accounts verify, in fact—lived, died, and rose again—and of whom the Bible says did so because of his incomprehensible love for the human race! The great paradox of this double-standard is that while most of us want to experience supernatural love, wisdom, and power; we will only worship the natural gods we understand, like—humanity, money, family, success, and relationships. The constant cycle of disappointment and lack of wonder and awe suffered at the hands of these secular idols—does not seem to deter us very much.

Our futile worship continues.

I know from personal experience, my friend, that serving secular “gods” is a self-defeating way to live. It made my life predictable, boring, selfish, unsatisfying, restless, and worst of all—I never reached the potential God created for me. For over twenty years I lived as a Christian, who was a slave to lesser gods: Is this you?

I don’t ever want to go back to that life.

The Bible entreats us:

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.”

(Isaiah 55:6)

God reminds us:

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

(Isaiah 55:8-9)

We can’t know God’s thoughts without knowing God; however, when we seek Him, He reveals His great mysteries to us!

While we will never completely understand God, the awe-inspired mystery of His presence will always provoke wonder. Next to Him, all other gods become mundane. Awe, by its very definition, presupposes mystery and depth that is beyond human understanding! This is—God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit! The Trinity is the only object of our worship that will forever satisfy our overwhelming desire for worship! And, not only that—we have the remarkable opportunity to know Them!!!

When we allow God’s Spirit to reign within us He reveals His glory and the great treasures of His wisdom. His Word becomes clearer to us because His Spirit reveals both the simplicity and the depth. When Jesus is Lord of our life, His Word is our love-letter and we desire it with the passion of one discovering life’s greatest treasures.

Ah, my dear friend, embark on discovering the great mysteries of God; it will be your most satisfying adventure!

“Let us press on to know the Lord; His going out is sure as the dawn; He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.”

(Hosea‬ ‭6:3‬)

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
