How Does God’s Word Become Delightful to Us?

Share

woman reading the bible

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭3

God’s Word becomes truly delightful to us when it moves from simply being in our mind to being in our heart. This transformation happens only after we are born again. It happens when we develop a close relationship with Christ through disciplines like prayer, Bible study and meditation—not in the mystical or eastern sense—but in the Biblical sense of pausing, pondering, and personalizing Scripture.

The Psalmist tells us that the one who delights in God’s law and meditates on it day and night becomes like a well-watered tree: rooted, fruitful, and enduring. But how do we get there?

Let’s be honest—sometimes reading the Bible can feel dry or routine. When that happens, it’s usually a sign that our relational connection with the Lord has weakened. We might be reading, but we’re not reflecting. We’re scanning, but we’re not sitting with the Word. We’re treating the Bible as information and not as conversation with a living God.

Meditation changes that. It’s as simple as slowing down to ask questions like:

  • What does this scripture reveal about God?
  • How is this speaking to my life right now?
  • What does obedience to this truth look like today?
  • How does this truth draw me closer into God’s presence?

When we have the attitudes of Christ and linger over God’s Word—as written from One who loves us with a supernatural love—it stops being just text on a page. It becomes personal. Convicting. Encouraging. Alive. And in time, we begin to delight in it because it connects us more deeply to the One who gave all for us.

We delight in what is precious to us. What could be more precious than God speaking directly to us? Through Scripture, Jesus—the Living Word (John 1)—draws us near, nourishes our soul, and transforms us from the inside out.

Just as a tree flourishes when its roots are near water, so we flourish when our hearts are rooted in the Word of God.

Today’s Challenge:
Choose one verse of Scripture and meditate on it throughout the day. Write it down. Repeat it aloud. Reflect on it during quiet moments. Ask God to speak to you through it—and to teach you to delight in Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word—not as a textbook, but as a living, personal love letter. Teach us to slow down and meditate on it, allowing Your truth to sink deep into our hearts. Make our time in Scripture not a task, but a treasure. Help us to delight in You more each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
