After yesterday’s devotional, a reader asked me what the following passage in Romans means:
“What may be KNOWN of GOD is manifest in them, for GOD has shown it to them.”
(Romans 1:19)
Understanding how God reveals Himself, helps us know how to discover Him. Even for those who do not want to know Him—He has placed the knowledge of Himself within them. According to the Bible, God reveals Himself to us in four primary ways:
- Creation;
- Our conscience (human mind and heart);
- Jesus; and
- The Bible.
What does the Bible say about CREATION revealing God to us?
“For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.”
Romans 1:20
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands. Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun.”
Psalms 19:1-4
Since the beginning of time, God made the knowledge of Himself evident through Creation. Even the less intelligent creatures and the earth itself praise Him throughout the earth. God has made humanity capable of recognizing the existence of a Master Creator, without which, such complex and beautiful creations could never exist. God desires to reveal Himself to humanity and be known by us, so He painted pictures, gave us live cinematography, created us with eyes, ears, and all of our physical senses with which to observe and know…He is real!
What does the Bible say about our CONSCIENCE revealing God to us?
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it to them.”
Romans 1:19
“When Gentiles who have not the [divine] Law do instinctively what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, since they do not have the Law. They show that the essential requirements of the Law are written in their hearts and are operating there, with which their consciences (sense of right and wrong) also bear witness; and their [moral] decisions (their arguments of reason, their condemning or approving thoughts) will accuse or perhaps defend and excuse [them].”
Romans 2:14-15
God reveals His existence to us in our conscience by impressing His law on our hearts even before we hear the Gospel message. We knew sin was sin before we ever heard the word. We knew right and wrong according to God’s standard even before we had any formal Bible education. Our conscience is created by God in order to help us detect His presence.
What does the Bible say about JESUS revealing God to us?
“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”
(John 1:18)
“Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
(John 14:9)
The signs and wonders Jesus performed revealed the glory and power of God. The way He lived, the miracles He performed, and His teachings and parables all demonstrated how much the Father cares for us. The way to know the Father and have a relationship with Him is to know the Son, who is the fullness of God’s revelation of Himself
What does the Bible say about the BIBLE revealing God to us?
Jesus revealed Himself those He was teaching. The Bible says:
“And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”
Luke 24:27
“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
Luke 24:44
“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.”
John 5:39
The Bible gives us eyewitness accounts of God’s revelation of Jesus.
“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”
II Peter 1:16-19
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is God’s revelation of Himself.
God reveals Himself to humanity in many ways, because He strongly desires to have an intimate relationship with us!
