Today we will review several verses that demonstrate the promises God is faithful to keep to those who are His children. This is, by no means, a comprehensive list! The scripture is full of promises. This devotional should simply whet your appetite to know more about the manifestation of God’s tremendous faithfulness!
Remember, God is faithful to us based upon His nature—not our own merit. We are saved by grace through faith; we have life because—He gives it; and we are nothing without Him.
God’s faithfulness is because of Who HE IS—not because of what WE DO.
Anything we do for God’s glory is only because of Who He is. This Biblical view of God’s faithfulness brings us such blessed relief from the pressure we often put on ourselves to “earn” God’s favor. We can’t. We don’t. “Surrender” is when we serve Him because we love Him. And when we live a life of surrender to God, we get a much clearer picture of His faithfulness!
So let’s look at some of the promises He makes in His Word which demonstrate His faithfulness.
FIRST, we have the promise of God’s faithfulness that if we believe in Him, we have (present tense) everlasting life.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
God is faithful to those who trust Him for salvation and to those who are not depending on their spiritual performance to get them to heaven. No one has any hope of getting to heaven by spiritual performance. No one keeps their salvation by spiritual performance. God keeps His promise to give us everlasting life the moment we trust Christ. If it is everlasting life, it is only so because God keeps His Word—otherwise the life He gives us was never “everlasting.”
When we share our story of salvation, we are sharing a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
SECOND, Paul the Apostle reminds us that because God’s faithfulness 100% secures our salvation—we are rich in everything!
“I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is FAITHFUL, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:4-9
Those who are born again are guaranteed to go to Heaven regardless of their spiritual performance. It’s so interesting that this passage is written to the Church at Corinth because their spiritual performance was awful. They were condoning extreme sexual immorality and even seemed proud of it! In this passage, it’s almost like God is saying, “Look Kimberly, if anyone would forfeit salvation, it would have been these people—but you have a promise from God that your salvation is not based upon your performance. If I Am faithful to them, I Am faithful to you!”
God’s faithfulness frees us to live for His glory.
THIRD, we are reminded that God, through His strength and wisdom, is faithful and will not allow trouble or temptation that is greater than we can bear.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
This promise indicates that God knows every trial that comes into our life that we cannot bear. Keep in mind, Paul also wrote “I can do ALL THINGS through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) Thus, these promises of God’s faithfulness are experienced—not in our own strength—but rather, when we have the attitude of Christ of being completely dependent upon Him. God will never allow more weight than we can handle in HIM. In our series about affliction, we learned that God uses tough times to bring about some of the richest blessings.
Because God is faithful, there is no trouble in your life that He cannot handle.
FOURTH, God is faithful to not just strengthen us, but also to work ALL things for good.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
Notice God didn’t say all things ARE good; but rather, that He will work all things FOR good for those who love Him and are His born again children. My friend, after we are born again and we actively engage in loving God, we gain His perspective. The best evidence of our love for Him is when we are carrying out His commission to disciple and manifesting the fruit of His Spirit.
When we are deeply engaged in His presence, we know that He is being faithful to us even when our circumstances overwhelm us.
FIFTH, God is faithful to forgive us when we sin against Him. The Bible says:
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8-9
Our soul and spirit have been made 100% righteous, but our flesh still sins. But God is faithful and we can depend on Him to forgive us and to cleanse us. If you are like me, you wonder how you could make the same mistake again and again and how God can continue to forgive. But when we come to God sincerely and say, “God, my heart is broken and I’m sorry I did this and I’m back again.” God promises He will ALWAYS forgive us.
We could go on and on with the list of ways God is faithful to us. But let me summarize with a few more before we end this devotional.
God is faithful to…comfort us (2 Corinthians 1:4); to guide us (Psalms 32); to give us wisdom (James 1:5); to hear us when we pray (James 5:13-18); to supply our material needs (Matthew 6:28-34); and—God is faithful to give to us generously!
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23
Now that we’ve covered many of the promises God has given us that reflect His faithfulness, the next question is: What’s the proof that we are walking in these promises? This is the topic of our final devotional in this series.
