If God created us each uniquely in HIS image, then why would we ever live as a copy of someone else? Even from childhood, we are constantly influenced to become like someone else. It can be very healthy; however, when it deviates from God’s Word—it becomes enslavement. We forget who we are and what our purpose is and become weak.
We are like a lion who thinks he is a helpless baby mouse and never develops into the majestic creature God created within him!
Even before we were born, God created us for a specific purpose and He wrote an entire script for our life. The Bible says,
“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
Psalms 139:16
Why would we want any script except God’s? Do we think someone can write a better story than He? He is the one who created all the uniqueness and beauty we enjoy. He created a staggering amount of beautiful diversity. Why would we ever want to be a poor copy of someone else when most of the people we model are struggling with the same problems we do? The late Howard Hendricks, who was a pastor and teacher, said:
“ALL people are born ORIGINAL, but MOST people die a COPY.”
Wow—that’s so true! Think about how often we live in the compromised position of trying to be someone else. Sure, those we admire can inspire us; however, too often we live imitating them—instead of becoming ALL God made us. After we are born again, God’s Spirit inhabits our soul and spirit.
What will we do with this transformative power within us?
Will we look for someone less than Jesus to imitate and pattern our life after??? Such cruel enslavement! Can you imagine that lion curling up helplessly waiting for a mamma mouse to come feed him? Can you imagine him squeaking and appearing helpless when being attacked by a smaller predator that he could easily crush if he were who he was made to be? Ridiculous, right??? When we are living as a poor imitation of someone else—we are forgetting who we are in God. We don’t have to live this way!!!
After we are born again and we 100% yield our life to God, we discover OUR uniqueness and we live for HIS glorious purpose!
But we MUST fight to grow our uniqueness. Our enemies don’t EVER want us to know we’re really a lion! Satan will use even innocuous things—like the practicalities of life—to distract us. For example, becoming a lawyer required 7 years of post-high school education and it was necessary to discipline myself for the journey. Along the way I allowed necessity to kill the unique plan of God. But in the last 14 years, God has taken me back in time to when I was a young hippie kid, writing and performing songs in joyful abandon by the evening firelight in our tepee. You see, I remembered that God created me to make unique music. He created the song inside and I had forgotten it. As I aged the dream was silenced by the practicalities, cynicism, and unbelief.
But after my salvation AND—after I became determined to make God the greatest passion of my life—He reminded me of the wonder of my childhood dreams.
God created us in HIS awesome image. He didn’t make anyone else like us. If God took the time to create us each uniquely then why would we try to be anyone else? Divine satisfaction is found living for God’s glory—in exactly who He made us. When we draw close to Him, He teaches us how to become this wonderful person. Through a relationship with Him, He gives us the opportunity to uniquely build an incorruptible inheritance!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
1 Peter 1:3-5
Don’t waste even one more day living as a copy of someone else. God has great plans for you!
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10

God is the master potter. He is the potter and we are the clay.
