We all desire to belong to a family or a community! Oh, how poignantly this deep desire was expressed from the witness stand in one of my recent guardianship hearings. My clients, the foster parents, were petitioning for guardianship of two children who had been in foster care for quite some time. On direct examination, when I asked her why the guardianship was in the best interest of the minor children, she said:
Amir recently came up to me and asked if he should be getting his stuff packed and ready to go. I was confused and asked why he would need to do this. His response was, “we’ve been living here for a while, so it’s probably time for us to find a new family now.”
She paused, her voice broke and then she said:
So today, I get to tell him that he doesn’t have to pack his bags anymore because—this is his home.
It was a moment that touched every person listening. I don’t believe there was a dry eye in the entire courtroom.
Every human understands their own desperate need to belong, and to know—unequivocally—that they are absolutely loved. What a beautiful picture of God’s love my clients are giving these two precious children! And—if you ask them—they will tell you that their love for these children is drawn from a much deeper well than their own heart. You see…
…Nii and Julia are part of God’s family; and HIS love has multiplied THEIR love, enabling them to give supernatural love.
This family is walking-out what the Bible calls “true Christianity.” (James 1:7) Julia and Nii are all up in the middle of experiencing the kind of love that GOD gives US. They loved Amir and Zion before these children legally belonged to them—much like GOD loved each of US before we belonged to Him.
“We love because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:19
When we are born again, the Bible says we become “members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19) Ah, my dear friend, when you know Jesus as your Savior and LORD, He makes His home in your heart. You know WHERE you belong and to WHOM you belong. There is nothing better in this world than to belong to God.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”
1 John 3:1
