Are You A Slave To Your Schedule?

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of being a slave to my crazy schedule! Time is the one commodity I will never get back. I never seem to have enough of it. I often live frantically, because I know I’m running out of it. My life is consumed by the clock. Indeed, I have a bench trial in two hours, so I need to “hurry up” and finish my time with God. Isn’t that how we live? But…

God has all the time in the world: He is not a slave to time.

“Beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

‭‭II Peter‬ ‭3:8‬

So if God is NOT ruled by time…should WE be? You may say “I MUST be ruled by my schedule, because if I’m not, I can’t feed my family.” While it is true that most of us have to live within some kind of schedule, wouldn’t it be wonderful to NOT be enslaved by our schedule? Believe it or not, this is NOT God’s plan for your life! You were NOT created for a schedule to rule your life. An insane schedule is just self-imposed tyranny!

So, if you are feeling crushed by your schedule, then take a minute and think about—WHY??? What is keeping the whip to your back? When I find myself drowning, I stop and reset with this question: Does what I’m doing really matter??? You see, IF I understand that God is not ruled by time, it makes sense He does NOT want me to be ruled by it either.

So how can we live without being a slave to our schedule? Well…

By choosing a better master!

~If I am too busy to have time with God everyday; I have chosen my master.

~If I am too busy for church; I have chosen my master.

~If I am too busy for the poor or people who need Christ; I have chosen my master.

~If I am too busy for my family; I have chosen my master.

~If I am too busy to pray throughout the day; I have chosen my master.

…and the list goes on.

But—when we choose to live according to God’s Word—this is what Jesus said was proof that we actually love Him AND thus, have made HIM our master. The rewards of loving God are immensely superior to the benefits of living our own way. That’s why Jesus said: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:33‬)

This may sound esoteric, but believe me it works. I can tell you from personal experience that when I make God the Master and Commander of my life, I become more effective and more efficient in ALL that I do. I do MORE with LESS time and—I do it BETTER. Psalms 90 inspires me to refocus:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past. We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days!”

Sure, HAVE a schedule; but let God lead us in making it. Allow for flexibility based upon the leading of His Spirit. Time after time when He has taken me off my schedule, I’ve seen the greatness of His plan. For example, yesterday, I had allocated an hour for a quick hike and—after I’d changed clothes and was making my way to the trail—God stopped me. I knew He had something else planned. I went back to the house where He had an incredible opportunity waiting for me. It was completely unexpected. An answered prayer. And—even—another task marked off my “to-do” list. Oh, and I wasn’t hungry for dinner…so even the calories I would have burned hiking didn’t matter. (Yes, God even cares about your physical health.) God always has the greatest plans!

Don’t you want to know GOD’s plan for YOU today???

When I wake up in the morning and immediately begin to converse with God about guiding my day, He transforms everything about my day. In fact, many times I barely recognize that I’m even living by a schedule; rather, it’s merely the framework for a much larger adventure. God is not limited by my “to do” list; and when I’m paying attention, He sorts everything out. I want to be in the habit of asking God:

“Heavenly Father, guide my life today!”
