Angels Among Us: We Are Not Alone

Share

angels among us

Jesus gave born again believers one of the most comforting promises:

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” Hebrews 13:5

Thus, our security does not depend on our circumstances. It rests on the unwavering presence of Christ Himself. Not only is He always present, but His angels are also actively engaged.

God never leaves His people to engage in His work alone.

From Genesis to Revelation, we are repeatedly shown God advancing His kingdom through the power of the Holy Spirit and the ministry of angels. Angels are His servants, messengers, and warriors. The Bible presents angels as beings created by God, operating under His authority, carrying out His commands, and participating in His redemptive plan.

This has always been true.

The book of Daniel provides one of the clearest windows into angelic activity. Daniel was mourning over the spiritual struggle of his people, who were still very far from following God. He prayed and fasted, and he had an astonishing encounter with an angel:

“Now on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, that is, the Tigris, I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz! His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭10‬:‭4‬-‭6‬ ‭

Not exactly the kind of angel we see described in our culture, right? The angel touched Daniel and caused his knees to knock together as he spoke:

“Suddenly, a hand touched me, which made me tremble on my knees and on the palms of my hands. And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.”

While he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling. Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬-‭13‬

Remarkable! The angel was carrying the answer to Daniel’s prayer—but he had to fight a battle to get to him. The angel had to contend with the forces of darkness. But the angel strengthened Daniel before returning to do battle with the evil prince of Persia:

“And he said, “O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace be to you; be strong, yes, be strong!” So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let my Lord speak, for you have strengthened me.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭10‬:‭19‬-‭20 ‭

These passages dismantle the illusions of modern culture, which most commonly depicts angels as gentle guardian figures providing comfort, as cute cherub-like beings symbolizing innocence, or as vague New Age entities associated with personal guidance and positive energy. These portrayals largely reflect artistic and spiritual traditions rather than the biblically described angels, who are typically presented as powerful, authoritative, and often fear-inducing messengers of God. Behind kingdoms, events, and struggles lies a deeper reality. Spiritual warfare is real, and angels are participants in that conflict under God’s command.

Another Biblical example was in the book of 2 Kings. When Elisha’s servant trembled at the sight of the great enemy force that surrounded them, Elisha prayed for God to open his eyes. The servant suddenly saw what had always been there:

“And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:16-17

The servant’s fear came from incomplete vision, not actual vulnerability. God’s protection was all around him. We, too, need to gain an awareness of this mighty force of Heaven. The Psalmist wrote:

“Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word.” Psalm 103:20

Angels execute God’s will and His word. They are God’s big assist for us as born again believers!

“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

Angels are in the service of His Majesty, King Jesus. Their service is part of God’s ongoing care for His people. We see this ministry throughout the life of Christ and the early church. Angels strengthened Jesus after His temptation, ministered to Him in Gethsemane, and an angel delivered Peter from prison.

My friend, angels are engaged WITH US in God’s redemptive work!

Yet, we must be careful about the attention we give to angels. Nowhere in God’s Word does an angel command worship of Himself. They are always portrayed as servants. When John, in Revelation 19, tried to worship a heavenly being, the angel set him straight!

“Then he [the angel] said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”

And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭19‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭

The Bible gives us instruction to protect us from an unhealthy fascination with angels. They are not to be worshiped. They serve God, not us. For the born-again believer, the comfort is profound. God is neither distant nor passive.

When we stand for Christ, we do not stand alone.

The same God who sent aid to Daniel, protection to Elisha, strength to His Son, and deliverance to His servants continues to govern all things with perfect authority. Take courage in that reality. Not just because angels surround you, but because the Lord of hosts reigns. The battles of life, both visible and invisible, can easily overwhelm us, but God has set up a hedge of protection around His people.

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34‬:‭7‬-‭8‬

My friend, the enemy can take our body, but it can never steal our soul.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your constant presence and for the unseen ways You uphold Your people. Strengthen my faith when I cannot see what You are doing. Guard me from fear, discouragement, and doubt. Help me trust Your power, Your wisdom, and Your perfect care. Teach me to rest in You alone, knowing that all of heaven moves according to Your will. Keep me steadfast in truth, bold in obedience, and anchored in Your promises. I place our confidence fully in You, Lord of heaven and earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
