Some of the most beautiful stories often arise from tragic injustices. Consider the case of Archie Williams, who endured 37 years of false imprisonment before being exonerated by DNA evidence. When he graced the stage of America’s Got Talent and sang “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” his performance left an indelible mark on Judge Simon Cowell, who admitted, “I will never, ever listen to that song in the same way again.” Cowell’s remark holds true because the knowledge of Williams’ injustice infused the lyrics with a depth and richness that resonated with the entire audience. Without his tragic story, Williams may never have been able to evoke such profound emotions.
It’s often the tragic injustices in our life that make our story most beautiful.
The reality is that evil and tragedy permeate our existence. Suffering was never part of God’s original plan; rather, it was humanity’s decision to embrace sin that plunged the world into darkness. However, God did not abandon us. Jesus willingly set aside His glory, enduring torture and death, to reconcile all of humanity to Him. There exists no greater narrative of injustice than the life of Jesus. He remains the only truly innocent man who was unjustly punished and put to death—for OUR sins.
Jesus’ life was shattered by tragic injustice and etched into history, bestowing upon every human the opportunity to write a priceless and eternal story.
Amidst our own personal tragedy, we must learn to find solace in knowing that God’s power transcends evil. Our surrender places us in a position for God to transform it into something good. This process is exemplified in the story of Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph endured years in prison. However, through God’s miraculous intervention, he rose to become second in command over all of Egypt. When his brothers appeared before him, seeking food for their starving tribe, they feared Joseph would exact revenge. Yet, Joseph responded,
“Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Genesis 50:19-21
If you find yourself entangled in injustice or tragedy, take comfort in the knowledge that God will eventually restore all things to their rightful order. God promised:
“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.
God Himself will be with them and be their God.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.
There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:3-4
