Do you wonder why people today are so confused about who they are? We are told we can be anyone we imagine. We think we are self-sufficient and independent. Our popular culture encourages us: “Find the REAL you by looking inside yourself.” But doesn’t this presume that HUMANITY has all the answers? Is the human mind capable of answering the big questions like, “why am I here?” and “Why does my life matter?” Almost as soon as we think we know, we discover we don’t. We have a sneaking suspicion we were born for something greater; but we are never quite confident that we’ve discovered it.
That suspicion, my friend, is actually the TRUTH.
God placed the knowledge of HIMSELF—inside every human—and IN HIM we CAN discover our greater purpose.
BUT we will NEVER discover it within ourselves, because if it is supernatural; thus, it transcends us.
“What may be KNOWN of GOD is manifest in them, for GOD has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are CLEARLY SEEN, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead.”
Romans 1:19-20
God has revealed Himself to every person. To discover ourselves, we must discover the God who made us. Our denial of God on any level, will rob us of our greatness. When I say “denial of God on any level,” what I mean is either—those who deny He exists at all [atheist] OR—those who SAY they believe in Him but LIVE like they don’t believe He exists because He is not evident in all areas of their life [“christian” atheist]. Either way, without God foremost in our life, we will never know the greatness He has created within us. To fail to know God—as He is—relegates us to living like a mighty eagle who fully believes he is a sewer rat.
Don’t you want to know who you REALLY are???
As I was studying this subject, I ran across a statement by A.W. Tozer:
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Said another way, “what we think about God is the most important thing about us.” The more we know about who God is, the more we realize the wonder He created within us. This would NEVER be revealed without our knowledge of Him. Examples…
When we know God is love; we understand how completely and perfectly we are loved.
When we understand how merciful God is, we deeply appreciate the life He has given us.
When we understand that our Father is sovereign, omnipotent, omniscient, we become more acutely aware of our own priceless value.
When we know that God is the Creator, we understand the depths of our own creativity.
Ah, the more you know God, the more we know the REAL you! Do you desire to know God more than you desire anything else, or have you been deluded into believing you can “find yourself” by looking somewhere else? Answering a simple list of questions will reveal to you WHERE you’re looking—in order to find yourself:
- What do you want most?
- What do you think about most?
- How do you use most of your money?
- What do you do with most of your free time?
- What do you worry about most?
- Who do you admire most?
- What do you laugh at?
Ah, my friend, you can’t fake what you love. The things we take pleasure in—don’t lie. The Lord knows our heart. We can say what we want about who or what we love most; but the things and people that are our great passions, reveal much about who we are. Through the gift of salvation, God gives us the ability to experience the greatest pleasure…the pleasure of His presence. Surrendering to God requires us to adjust our thinking to anticipate what we will gain. We are often more anxious about what we may lose than what we may gain. Our love for God does not originate with us; we love Him because He first loved us.
Make God the supreme pleasure of your heart and you will find your best self.
