For years, I felt the stress of turning the world upside down to make sure those around me were happy. If someone was frustrated or disappointed, I felt responsible, as though it were my job to fix it or somehow engineer their emotional state. It was an exhausting, impossible task, and for a long time I did not understand why it never worked. No matter how hard I tried, someone was always unhappy about something.
Then the Lord showed me an amazing truth: He did not create me for the purpose of being anyone’s source of happiness. Happiness is fleeting and conditional, tied entirely to circumstance—shifting with a bad night’s sleep, a canceled plan, or a disappointing outcome. No person, no matter how devoted or attentive, can consistently produce something so unstable in another human being.
Why would I want to be a slave to such a fleeting and fickle emotion?
Yet—I have watched people fall into the exact same trap—managing an office, hosting a family reunion, planning a wedding, or even just trying to make everyone enjoy a simple walk in the park. We shape entire relationships, events, and seasons of life around the goal of keeping everyone content. Then we wonder why we feel depleted and why it is still, somehow, never enough.
My friend, God does not require us to be the source of anyone’s happiness! What a relief, right? What He DOES require from us is to live in the purpose He equips us for after we are born again. We were created to glorify Him:
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Living for God’s glory is our principal calling—not managing the emotions of everyone around us. Glorifying God is manifested in many ways and brings others something much deeper than happiness—it brings joy! We get to give out the gold—the eternal things. For example, think of the eternal joy of leading someone to salvation or discipling them. Think of how our lives are a picture of Christ when the fruit of the Holy Spirit flows through us. When we pray, commit to a local church, and are faithful ambassadors of God, He fills us with joy unspeakable, which glorifies Him. We are a light in the darkness. It is through loving obedience to God—not making people happy—that we live out our purpose and become so full of joy that we must give it to others. Jesus said:
As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that MY JOY may remain in you, and that your JOY may be full. (John 15:9-11)
That joy is not manufactured by another person. It flows from abiding in Christ—staying close, staying connected, and staying obedient. God is love, and He loved us before we were capable of loving Him. When I am tempted to feel responsible for someone else’s happiness, God pivots me back to my real assignment: to glorify Him—not to manage their emotions. It’s a relief!
My friend, if you have spent years exhausting yourself trying to be the source of happiness for everyone around you, I want you to hear this clearly: Stop. You cannot be someone else’s source of happiness, and you were never meant to be. That job belongs to God, and He does it far better than we ever could. Your job is simply to glorify Him and point others toward Jesus, letting His joy overflow into the people around you.
When we give people God, we give them far more than the gift of being happy—we give them abiding peace, unmeasurable love, and the deepest joy.
Prayer:
Lord, I often try to be the source of happiness for the people, as though their contentment depended entirely on me. Realign my heart every day around my true purpose—to glorify You and to point others to Jesus. Teach me to abide in loving obedience so fully that Your joy overflows from me. Help me to release the outcomes I cannot control and to rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
